I am keen to connect with anyone else using their website in any way
for gathering together, creating and making accessible quality
information as a tool in their local community development and / or
campaigning work. An illustration of this is on our websites at
http://www.peckhamvision.org
http://www.bellenden.net
If you think your websites do this, could you post the links in this
discussion head so we can think about the similarities and differences
between the websites before we meet at the event?

We are just up the road from you and have numerous campaigns running
on our site. We try and provide as much background info as we can.

See http://www.hernehillforum.org.uk/current_campaigns

Some are more relevant than others, their seems to be a natural ebb
and flow of information and interest. The section on our streets, our
shops is expanding. It is a collation of links and information gleaned
from elsewhere plus local stuff that people have contributed to.
Sometimes it provides a real debating point and reference point for
both residents and council officers.

Hope it helps.

Hi Giles - many thanks. fascinating. That is a big coverage on yr
website. I'd be very interested to know how many of you are involved
in working on it and keeping it up to date and up to scratch.

I like a number of its features and have already registered for the
Planning alert to test it out! I think I won't have the capacity to
move in some of your really good directions because of the work
involved. There are two of us who put a lot of effort into our three
websites (2 on one host), and can’t do more.

We have a similar idea to yours about using self selected pictures to
get at what we like and don't like about our neighbourhood - see ours
here: http://www.bellenden.net/neighbourhood-pictures One of our
purposes for this is to collect enough material to write out own
planning document to present to the Council and developers and anyone
about what we as residents think of our neighbourhood and what we want
to preserve and what we want changed. I have a strong passion that we
need to take ownership of these things instead of just passively
waiting to be asked what we think in a few weeks of a plan that
experts and professionals in authority have spent years developing, or
just as bad constantly fighting off the wrong kinds of ideas or poorly
thought through in ad hoc planning applications.

I couldn't find a map anywhere on the site to show exactly what area
your website covers. Is there one? I am very keen on using maps in
this digital form! Have quite a lot on ours in various places.

I noticed in the list of linked groups there are several from
Southwark. Would you be willing to list two of ours that may be of
interest to Herne Hill people? These are

To be honest the content is mainly provided by about 1.3 people. All
the traders maintain their own pages (in theory) so that we don't have
to look after them. Some traders have clicked with the idea and update
their pages regularly, others just don't quite see the benefit
although they were keen initially. Getting them to realise that they
need to work a little on advertising and marketing is beyond them
sometimes. The campaigns stuff is mainly collated by one individual to
get things going. Over time we try and get the individuals who are
involved in any campaign to post and maintain their own stuff.

We are very keen on getting the map up and running in greater detail.
I really liked your bellenden residents stuff and have put in a link
to their youtube video. Working on a vision for an area and driving it
through councils and others is great, just what we should be doing. As
you say, sitting back and getting what we are given has been the way
in the past and we get the neighbourhood we deserve.

It looks like these sites are making a positive contribution, and I
like the fact that Herne Hill sites are being used as reference points
for policy and planning decisions. I would like to see sites like
these participate in building up a full picture of local and passing
through habits, including local car ownership and the provenance of
car journeys made through the area. Look forward to discussing.

Best wishes

Mark

up in kings cross we have www.kingscrossenvironment.com which has
fought a fair few campaigns - mainly on planning and licensing and
getting broken stuff fixed on the street. i set teh site up in 2006
to help with this sort of thing which is an informaiton game.
sometimes we win - getting £1m out of network rail for instance,
others we lose. we also find that as council officiers and property
developers come and go the website has become a local corporate memory

see

http://www.kingscrossenvironment.com/kings_cross_station_refurbishment/

http://www.kingscrossenvironment.com/2010/09/typical-street-issues-north-kings-cross.html

http://www.kingscrossenvironment.com/cemex_concret_plant_ufford_street/

the site has up to 6 contributors who write stuff and a wider network
of peopel who send us stuff to put on. we don't run the site for
comments much we have just over 1000 articles and i think about 1200
comments

cheers
