Hi everyone, I am looking forward to meeting you all and swapping ideas. I am especially interested in empty shops and derelict buildings in my neighbourhood.  Annette Albert

Hi Annette - we are also very keen to develop innovative ways of
getting empty buildings into use as quickly as possible even if for
very short term periods. (ie even for just a day or few days as window
display spaces or spaces for consultations). We would like to swap
ideas on how to set up web spaces to collect info on empty sites -
descriptions of premises and the key contacts to get the premises into
use whether for very short, medium or long term uses. For the context

Hi Eileen, I am particularly interested to know what are the remedies available to us to get the buildings/shops let or sold. What is the responsibility of the local authorities in all of this.  Look forward to meeting you Annette

I BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY GOOD PLATFORM BUT WE SHOULD NOT RESTRICT OURSELVES TO ANY PARTICULAR AREA
HOPE WE WOULD HAVE A VERY CONSTRUCTIVE DISCUSSION ON 25TH

Thanks for your thoughts Mohammed. I agree we shouldn't restrict
ourselves. The aim of this group is to air as many relevant ideas as
possible with constraint.

We ran a few campaigns regarding local properties.
See
http://www.hernehillforum.org.uk/antisocial_behaviour/$things_we_dislike_about_herne_hill/~View?id=04afcbb1-b311-4c58-9d6c-7b61919d4c49
The main issue is aim to get the Government Office for London to issue
a Public Request to Order Disposal.

We also trail on a monthly update the figures for vacant commercial
properties in our area - always on the front page. This embarrasses
the politicians a bit.

In Brixton they got together with the local landlord in the main
Brixton Market and had a whole area set aside for incubator shops. Low
or no rent for three months to see if your business idea would work.
Now a fun thriving area - always something new and many tenants have
now gone on to a permanent location after going through their proof of
concept.

In Herne Hill we also have a scheme that for one month we took over a
vacant ex- video rental store (the project wasd called the Apollo
project - after the video store name) and had activities and events
going on every day and evening. It was fun and got loads of publicity.
The politicians came out in their droves to be filmed there. Shame
they hadn't done anything about over the previous years...
In all of this the local web sites were used to get interest going, to
drive the projects forwards and to get political traction from it in
the end.

Eileen,

Have you seen the Artists & Makers Empty Shops project? They have a
guide you can download which gives you lots of detail about setting up
projects inside unused shop buildings:

Hi

Empty shops and buildings is something Digeth has plenty of, I wrote a post about a few projects from elsewhere in the world that does interesting and exciting things with them, such as the Oubliette in London and New York's Grand Opening:

Will be very interested in this session!

Cheers, Nicky.

Hi all

I agree this is a vital topic, and the same problems and possible
solutions apply throughout the capital's inner city areas. I would
like to see a discussion which recognises that we have finite
resources, and need to address the issue on the basis that some
sectors of the community will not get everything they want. What
gives the greatest good to the greatest number, should be the guiding
principle.

I believe we face a fundamental choice between appeasing local
residents who wish to use roads for car storage, and encouraging
pedestrian custom to flow, with occasional short-stay for small
vehicles. "Grants for shops" etc., are a method which has been shown
to fail repeatedly in Camberwell and Peckham, so a more strategic
approach is definitely required. I am very interested to hear the
ideas of others.

Best wishes

Mark
