Here is the official statement from the event organizers:
"The Nikkei Bridge would like to thank all of the volunteers who RSVP'd
for Little Tokyo Sparkle this year.
Unfortunately, we will be cancelling the project this year as an
indirect result of a directive from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa late last week. He has ordered all high schools in the
county to participate in a countywide cleanup which will coincide with
his first 100 days, this Saturday, October 8th. All of the county's
cleaning equipment, including brooms and shovels, will be allocated for
his project's use.
As a result there is no cleaning equipment left for us to use this
Saturday. Nikkei Bridge Cabinet members tried to revise the format of
the project as well as looked into getting cleaning equipment donated
to the cause. Unfortunately all alternatives required longer lead time
than was available to us.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and hope to see you
at our next community service event!
Sincerely,
Walter K. Morimoto
2005-2006 Community Service Chair
The Nikkei Bridge"
