We're making major progress in schools.
Last week, Mount Holyoke College announced it would accept applications from transgender students. Mills College released a similar policy a week earlier. Transgender and gender nonconforming students also scored a major victory this year when the U.S. Department of Education announced that Title IX protects transgender students.
As there is a growing consensus and acceptance for the inclusion of transgender and gender non-conforming students across the country, there is also a lot of work that remains to be done. From the heartbreaking story of a trans student denied proper housing at his university to the ongoing national problem of bullying and harassment, it's critical that students who have faced discrimination continue to file complaints.
Our work in advocating for policies nationwide that ensure safety and respect for all students, like we did with the Department of Education, relies on people like you who continue to fight for the inclusion of all students regardless of their gender identity or expression.
To advocate with your school for better policies to support all students, use our Model School District Policy on Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Students.
Because all students have a right to be who they are, and to be treated with respect, we will continue to fight for and enlist your help in fighting for policies that improve school environments and allow students to thrive.
Sincerely,
Harper Jean Tobin,
Director of Policy
National Center for Transgender Equality
