Hi,

I am looking for assistance with modeling a window frame that is recessed into the floor/sill. Please see the attached image for reference.

Specifically, should the side surfaces marked in red be modeled as adiabatic, or should wood be applied to those sides?

Thank you for your help.

If this is for a frame at the building perimeter, then I'd use the floor surfaces and side of frame on one side as internal, other sides as external, also modelling ground for 20m externally and down into the ground. Adiabatic then being both sides of the model and underneath. Then model psi-value would be model result minus floor minus wall (if using external dimensions, there might be some 'wall' allocated to base of slab) and minus frame.

If you are modeling this according to the NFRC standard I would suggest you refer to the Technical Interpretations manual (available under Technical Documents on the NFRC website).  TI-2024-04 addresses how to model this scenario.

Thanks for the suggestions and references. I am modeling in accordance with NFRC, so will dive into TI-2024-04.
