After creating a model, getting results, and saving.   The following day, I can not open some of my THERM (xxx.THM) files.  After FILE -> OPEN, I get the message "Unexpected file format." followed by an hour glass, then crash.   I can not find a pattern or reason.   It happens on different models, with different materials.  My only course of action is to re-draw the model.   The files that have the issue were created with, and opened with 7.8.55  This has happened 12 times in the last 4 days.

Roger,

Can you draw something simple like this:

And then just do what you did with the previous models. Can you open it again after closing the THERM?

Regards,
Simon

Hi,

My colleague and I are facing the same issue very often with the same version of therm. It does not happen to all models, just some random ones and we cannot find a common mistake pathway between them.

I am wondering if you are running the files on your local computer or in a cloud environment?

Can you send the path where the files are located?

Also, can you send the therm7.8.ini file, which is located here:

C:\Users\Public\LBNL\Settings

And can you send a file that runs and one that gets this error?

You can send all this information / files to rdmit...@lbl.gov

Robin

Hi Robin,
I sent a bunch of files with some detailed explanations to Simon.
Have you had any luck with them?

I attached my term ini file in case you need it.

This is a known issue with THERM 7.8.55, and is fixed in THERM 7.8.57, which is why I put this notice, as prominently as I could, on the THERM 7.8.55 download section.

Once the file becomes corrupted, it can't be fixed.

WOW!!!!!!
Very interesting that the NFRC certified simulator exam 2022 had to be on the 7.8.55. Literally to screw us?

I just lost hours of work and i can't get it back.

Thanks,

For a developer team that provides this software for free to be uses by anyone I feel that this anger/critique is misdirected.

Please complain to NFRC that they do not provide (the common) option "or newer" as they do with other tools referenced.
Also, if they insist on a specific version for compatibility (e.g. 7.8) for their reviewers, they should not reference to a subversion such as 55.

There are always bugs in software applications, paid or not.
My 2c as an outside observer,
Georg

Yes I think the best course of action is to let NFRC know that they need to allow simulators to move to the latest version which has 2 very significant bugs fixed.

I have indicated to NFRC that they should approve THERM 7.8.57 for use by simulators because of this very significant but.

There were 2 bugs fixed between 7.8.55 and 7.8.57. There really isn't any reason that NFRC should not use the latest version.

I meant to say "bug" not "but" in the answer above (!)
