This is the update I have from Tanya Merkle and our Manatee Operations Center:

 

Item 2021-01 – Longboat Key Multi-use Path repair –  Confirmation that FDOT Manatee Operations will be performing this work under a Maintenance Contract Work Document, not a traditional construction project. This Contract is set to let in March 2025 with an anticipated start date of June 2025. It is a 1-year contract with approximately 3,750’ of 7’ wide section that will be replaced at the following locations that have been identified as the highest priority:  

    1. Between Binnacle Point Drive & Dream Island Road - Start (27.4199370, -82.6662340), Stop (+27.420171,-82.666440) 2640.46 LF
    2. Between Lyon’s Lane & Bayview Drive - Start: (27.4266970, -82.6751631), Stop: (27.4269624, -82.6755792) 429.73 LF
    3. Between Edlee Lane & Laguna Drive - Start: (27.4247153, -82.6721942), Stop: (27.4248971, -82.6724611) 417.44 LF
    4. Between 6570 Whitney Beach entrance to 6800 Whitey Beach entrance - Start: (27.4322386, -82.6830656), Stop: (27.4323056, -82.6831389) 156.43 LF
    5. Between Cedar Street & 6960 Gulf of Mexico Dr. entrance - Start: (27.4339444, -82.6847778), Stop: (27.4341389, -82.6849167) -  107.07 LF

I gotta ask...

Why is FDOT spending money to patch a substandard facility?  Why not take the opportunity to widen those sections to more appropriately accommodate the mix of users.  At minimum, it would seem a 10' path is warranted.  What did the Complete Street's plan call for?
