Clearly one of the greatest differences between employment in the nonprofit and for-profit worlds is the concept of working towards a mission beyond the bottom line. Affinity for a mission, and serving a greater purpose, are part of the trade-off for lower salaries and lack of bonuses, etc., in the nonprofit sector. But job seekers – especially those new to the nonprofit sector – often forget the importance of this when interviewing for a nonprofit job.
The mission question is a part of every nonprofit job interview, not just for front-line social workers, but for all staff, including back-office accounting and administrative jobs. Sometimes the hiring manager will clearly ask, “What is it about our mission that attracts you?” Just as often, the mission question is implied in questions like, “Why did you choose to apply for this job?” or “What experience do you have with clients like ours?”
