have already been bought, boarded and posted for new high-rise condos
of their own. I didn't see evidence of a massive police crackdown like
Hollywood's had, but once those new buildings open I'd expect it to
start pretty quickly, especially with the recent spat of violent
assault that's made the news.
One thing that has improved is getting between downtown and the strip,
they've put up a special bus line called 'the Deuce', shiny new
double-decker busses run by the city's bus system but much easier to
catch and more tourist friendly (extending the monorail to downtown on
one end and the airport on the other would be even smarter, but between
cabbies wanting to keep the airport racket and strip casinos not
wanting to make it easier for guests to get to the higher-payout
downtown casinos, the monorail may just be as big as it's ever going to
get). $2 one way, $5 gets you an all-day pass on the bus (think it
also transfers--airport bus, etc). So it's cheaper then the monorail
(*especially* if you want to get on and off several times) and gets you
a lot closer to many more strip casinos (but doesn't get very close to
the convention center), highly recommended unless you're in a hurry.
The best part of the bus is that locals use it too... Twice I saw hot
young guys onboard who looked a little down on their luck, was very
tempted to ask if they wanted to make a little cash but I felt it was a
bit too public to ask, damn my timidity.
