Here's the story: El Salvador was hit by near hurricane strength winds in
early January 2008, causing considerable damage to coffee farms. The worst
hit area was Chalaltenango. In the area of Chalatenango lies a farm named
La Montaña. This farm is owned by Raúl Ochoa Hernández. The winds came at
just the wrong time and stripped the coffee trees not only of the fruit but
also the leaves, meaning the best estimates for Mr. Ochoa's next harvest are
not until 2010.
This would be a horrible story on its own, however, La Montaña is no
ordinary coffee. It has risen in the auctions over the years from 5th place
3 years ago to number one last year. Here's the description Terrior Coffee
Roasters gives of this coffee:
"This La Montaña [2007] lot is all about balance and proportion. It gushes
with layers of sweetness from hot to cold. Complex flavors of honey, rich,
black Assam tea, malt, stone fruits and a touch of roses and soft lavender
are finely woven together. It can truly be called a classic coffee."
This is a farmer who is doing everything right and we at Kopplin's Coffee
want to support that kind of dedication. So, starting Saturday, (and until
the coffee runs out) in connection with Terroir Coffee Roasters, we are
selling this coffee ($10 per cup) and donating all the proceeds to the farm.
This is what relationship coffee is all about...rewarding and standing by
those who are dedicated to producing something better. I'm excited to be a
part of this and hope many of you will be able to come and enjoy this
amazing coffee.
