Hi everybody,

I am new to this email list and I want to take a moment to say hello. I also want to thank those involved in providing the platform for this arena!

I am wondering - are there are any upcoming events that are planned or being planned?

As this is a regional list, I'm also wondering if I know anyone here; if so, hey! If I don't know anyone here yet, I am glad to know that (as new acquaintances) we do have one good thing in common!

I'm also glad to make this community one member stronger. By the way, how many active members do we have here?

With care,
Derek Jenkins

Welcome to the list Derek. It's nice to see enthusiasm before it gets crushed my the cynicism that generally follows experience. ;)

I've been thinking about trying to get a KLUG lunch together somewhere on the strip at some point. I don't like giving up my evenings but it's nice to get out for lunch on occasion.

Take care,
Bret

How about farther west? KLUG seems to have died around UT. Maybe in Farragut or at PSCC, there might be more interest? For me in Loudon County, going to UT area and dealing with parking and traffic would be a pain.

I would be fine with a meeting around UT, as I am a student there. However, I would probably be able to go elsewhere if need be.

Likewise for me making it out west. Feel free to organize one in your area! :)

I'll just have a normal lunch and if any KLUGers wanna join for some conversation you're welcome to.  My work schedule today and tomorrow are shot, but I could probably swing Thursday or Friday.  I'll have an hour sometime between 11AM and 1PM. That work for anyone? I am fine just about anywhere but mellow mushroom. They always seem to have the music too loud to really accommodate conversation.

Pick a place and time.  I will be there.

I also live near UT campus. I'm down for anything in Knoxville.

Just FYI - if we do ever want a meeting place and people can brave the UT traffic and parking, I can arrange things in Min Kao. That said, after 5:30 or so, parking in the garage or the lot next to Min Kao is not an issue and since we’re at the far end of campus, you can avoid Cumberland traffic.

Min kao would be great, but we would either have to bring lunch or order in pizza. If we had an afternoon or evening meeting sometime it would be perfect. Going off of what brett said Thursday would be better for me.

If at Min Kao, would there be a program? Long drive if not an interesting program.

I also live outside of Knoxville. My house is in McMinn County.

Fwiw, I have a higher possibility of being available during the weekends than during the week days.

I propose we have 2 meetings, an informal lunch and another more formal meeting that people father away could make it to at min kao in the afternoon with a program of some sort.

I think that we should recognize that we have two groups of interest: one for Linux system administration and networks; and one for Linux desktop users.  That said, users like me in Farragut would be most interested in the latest distros and problems with different versions of Linux.  I suggest that everyone give some hint of their area of interest.  For me, I am a Linux user with Mint on my main computer along with Windows 7 and LXLE version of Lubuntu on my older test computer for the CHIPS program.  CHIPS gives away computers to homebound people who cannot afford a computer.

This group used to have regular meetings. What usually happens (and by that I mean it has happened like 3-4 times) is that we’ll meet and then each subsequent meeting, fewer people show up. The most successful events have been the “installfests” where we invite members of the community to bring their computers and we help them install Linux.

I agree that regular meetings are useless unless there is a program. I’m just saying that if we ever need a space for an event, I can likely get one. I would be in favor of an informal lunch or dinner meeting myself though.

I am a ut student in computer engineering. I dual boot debian and Windows on my desktop, as well as run a debian server at my house. On it I run a voip server, a few websites with Cherokee webserver, and basically anything I decide to play around with.

Thanks for chiming in, everyone.

As for myself, I remotely manage a few red hat and ubuntu servers that host web apps or git repos. I do so as a somewhat part time sys admim, although the role is gaining steam and will become my 'day job' (woo hoo!). One task I will be getting into in the near future is to build a server with an ssd array, and I will probably use a Linux type os for it - not sure yet which flavor but that will come... Perhaps arch ^_^

I also use Linux systems at home. I've been using Fedora since fc17/18 and it hasn't really let me down.  I tend to be a gnome fan but I've been using openbox (via #!) and I tend to like it also.

Count me in the desktop users.

I have been using Linux Lite since Jan this year after several years on OS X. Tried Linux Mint Xfce and Manjaro Xfce for a while but had update problems with Manjaro and Xfce seems like a step-child of Mint. Tried to install a few other but couldn't manage partitioning. Started on MEPIS (Point & Click) many years ago but got talked into Fedora at an install fest. Updating and installing on dial up scared me into buying a new iMac PPC just before Apple when to Intel. :-(   Got tired of no support and websites threaten that if I did not update browser (which I couldn't) so have gone back to Linux. My wife uses the iMac.

How many desktop users are interested in meeting in Farragut area?

If you want to make KLUG succeed you need to advertise at LOPSA ETENN.
That is likely going to be the largest group of Linux-aligned people you
will find in the area who can tell other people. That and have something
that makes people interested in attending on a consistent basis.

It's more of a commitment than lunch and I don't live in Knoxville any more so I couldn't help much but if enough people felt energetic you might consider holding a local Software Freedom Day event--

http://softwarefreedomday.org/

The tone of those are more public outreach style and tend to incorporate installfest sessions.

Also, a little introduction. Hi, everybody!

I'm from Knoxville, now living on the other side of the planet but visit every couple of years to see friends and family. After my last visit I thought it would be fun to get connected back a bit via mailing lists.

I use Linux all over the place. I was using Mint for a year or two but recently switched to Ubuntu for better device support. I've since found that Unity doesn't actually bother me as much as it did at first.

Happily, I also use Linux at work. Approximately all our desktops and servers are Ubuntu (Kubuntu for the desktops) with the exception of some Mac's floating around. I've actually just recently been able to swap my Mac laptop for a Linux one there and I'm suddenly 2x more productive. I think I was mostly using the Mac as an X terminal and a web browser.

A recent fun project I'm well into is being able to repeatably set up small isolated linux clusters and then install the past n years of legacy home grown company code on it using debian packages and puppet and have it all mostly work in isolation from our home network.

I have a not a blog at https://typist.geek.nz/

I mostly type Python all day.

Lately I've been getting into AngularJS -- is nice, makes the javascript go away and hide somewhere.

this sounds like a good idea.
i am not running linux on my macbook, but am curious and interested.
back when the group homepage said that meetings were held regularly at ...
restaurant / baked goods, west, home depot shopping center?
after i send this i'll remember.
i went the day it was supposed to be and just wished somebody had updated the homepage to say that you no longer meet regularly.
whiny, i know.
still interested, but it would have to be bus - accessible for me.
