I did find the problem of why nothing was being shared.   It worked after I added "valid users = username" to the shares.  The options to /etc/init.d/samba that I mentioned earlier still aren't working, but thankfully samba does start when I boot the machine, and samba reload works.

Did you add your password to the samba server?

sudo smbpasswd <username> <password>

The samba server stopped working on the one machine I got it working on last night.  I shut it down last night.  Today I got it working on the other computer (dell poweredge 750) today.  I tried to connect, but when I booted up the desktop machine today, samba wasn't working.  After I got it working on the server, I rebooted the server and samba didn't work anymore.  On the server I'm able to start, stop and restart samba.  It worked again when I restarted it.  I can't restart samba on the desktop.  Reloading it doesn't work.

For now I'm going to install ssh on the server and use sftp to move data between them.

Thanks for your help
