It looks like there will be a meeting of constituting Linux SIG within the East Tennessee Computer Society this Thursday at 7:00 PM. I will try and make it so we can see how the future of this mailing list and the knoxlug.org website might figure into this. I would like to close this list in favor of something not run by UT (Google group?). Please come if you can make it:

• Thursday 11/12 at 7:00pm
• Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 400 Kendall Rd, Knoxville TN

What is the East TN Computer Society? I looked on their site but did not see what they actually are/do.

I'd like to know that as well. :) I know it's been around for a long time (I remember hearing about it many years ago as a possible home for KLUG). That's why I'm going to this meeting. Given that KLUG hasn't existed in any form by very very sporadic posts on this mailing list, any activity might be good activity.

Markus,

I have not been a part of this list long and have not participated in a discussion... yet, but I would be happy to host the site and/or the mailing list.

I would be opposed to a google group - mostly because it's google :)

Also, anyone interested in mesh networking?  I have been following the CJDNS project for the last year or so and I also run a few nodes.

I used to belong to the ETCS.  That effort got me involved in CHIPS.  The group meets monthly and discussed computer related information.  It is Windows centred, but they discuss other OSs as well.  Haven't been to a meeting in years.

CHIPS keeps me busy and up to date.  I prefer Linux, and use Mint 17 and LXLE currently.  Current project is for a blind user and I am looking at Windows with JAWS, or NVDA, and Vinux and Knoppix-Adriane.

So it it just a chat session meet/greet type of thing for computer enthusiasts or is there more structure/goals related?

I know with groups like RACK (Radio Amateur Club of Knoxville) they have speakers and topics monthly.

I was a member years ago too when it was much bigger and had a Linux SIG.

Thanks for sending out the announcement, Markus. I do not use Google groups due to privacy concerns. The Facebook page could be the replacement for this mailing list. Keeping the website would be nice.

We should find some solution outside of Facebook (and Google) for the people that don't like either. There are also those with concerns about FB. I think it would be good if people could come to this meeting. i am still in touch with the owner of knoxlug.org (Ernie Fulton) and I'll keep him up to date what the group decides. He also reads this email list.

There may be room for more than one Knoxville linux group if people don't want to be part of the ETCS. However, we have to start somewhere.

The EECS department is winding down its internal email servers so that's why I'd like to move the email list to another service.

I know someone offered to host it. I personally would prefer hosting it somewhere in "the cloud" so it's not dependent on a specific member or members, but I am fine with whatever the group (when it reconstitutes itself) decides.

Just chiming in here: perhaps something like GNUSocial (
https://gnu.io/social/ ) or RetroShare (
http://retroshare.sourceforge.net/ ) might fill the void. I have a
couple small servers available but bandwidth always seems to be the
issue. If using Google Mail isn't off the table Google now offers
some features for email for the domains registered with them (
https://domains.google.com/about/ ).

again these are just suggestions

My main concern with hosting this at some member's house or in their own infrastructure is what happens if they leave the group. Having it hosted at some service where the responsibilities can easily be transferred would be my preference. I think having a meeting with everyone will be good.
