Update on the Northeast 85th Street and I-405 Interchange closure: On track to reopen at 4 a.m. tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 29

Crews have successfully demolished the two off-ramp bridges, paved and restriped new entrances and exits to I-405, and installed new temporary intersections with signals at the interchange. We’re on track to reopen the area by 4 a.m. tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 29.

After the area reopens tomorrow morning, the way you travel around the area will be different. The new temporary signals will now allow northbound drivers to go westbound and southbound drivers to go eastbound. All drivers entering and exiting I-405 will use the temporary signals instead of the loop ramps and ramp bridges. Please drive carefully and cautiously as you learn how to navigate these changes. The graphic below (also attached) shows the traffic changes to the area.

These temporary signals will be in place until the new roundabouts are installed in 2026. The temporary signals help reduce weaving on Northeast 85th Street, making the area safer during construction. Using long-term temporary signals also gives crews enough space to complete construction activities safely.

We know this weekend may have been frustrating if you got stuck in traffic or noticed increased traffic by your house. We heard you and your concerns and are working with our team and construction crews to make future closures a little easier on everyone who travels around the community.

We appreciate your patience as we work towards creating a better and safer Northeast 85th Interchange for all travelers, regardless of how they travel. Learn more at https://bit.ly/85th-Interchange-BRT

Reminder: Community pop-up event on Tuesday, Jan. 30 from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

The project team and Sound Transit will be hosting a community pop-up event at Kirkland City Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 30 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Stop by to talk with representatives from WSDOT, Sound Transit, Graham, and the City of Kirkland.

Whether you're a commuter, a resident, or just interested in the project, you’re invited to stop by, ask questions, hear updates, and learn about upcoming construction work. The team will also have information about traffic changes and the new temporary intersections we installed this weekend.

Event Details:

  • Please use the building’s North entrance to access the Council Chambers.
  • Parking: Plenty of public parking is available in Kirkland's City Hall parking lot; drivers enter the north side of parking lot using Fifth Avenue.

Sincerely,

Allie Breyer (she/her)
