Professional Development LMS

Hello KIC members,

Does your district or school use one central LMS or platform as a hub for professional development? Are you using your student LMS and building a space for educators? Did you buy another platform or integration? I would love to hear about any success stories, lessons learned, or companies to avoid.

We are looking to build something because:

• There are a growing number of cross-departmental PD needs related to curriculum, initiatives, etc., with many subgroups based on roles and experience. We would like to identify and prioritize PD objectives based on what people have participated in.
• We would like a space to track what PD staff have participated in within the LMS platform, in-person, and outside of the district so that instructional leaders can be more intentional about what to offer. Ideally, with a dashboard where we could isolate staff in specific buildings and roles.
• We would like to upload coaching cycle documents for individual staff members to build a learning profile for each staff.
• Eventually, we would like to create a more modern and efficient PD approach that gives teachers more autonomy. We believe having a platform to keep track of all of the professional learning will help us be more flexible.

Essentially, the same reasons you would use an LMS but we keep running into hurdles based on the LMS being set up per calendar school year vs. an ongoing space. Any advice or insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

In Elk River we use Schoology to host and facilitate over 100 PD offerings for staff.  They are required to take 7 hours during the course of the school year.  We rollover content and/or add new courses on a yearly basis.  We have also allowed access to our para's.  Feel free to reach out if you would like to learn more.

In Cambridge Isanti we are very similar to Elk River, we call it Flex PD and teachers are required to have it completed by the end of Trimester 2 so those that don't complete it need to attend the last PD day.  Those that do complete it are excused from the last PD day of the year.

We also allow substitute teachers to participate (without compensation) if they want to complete coursework for licensure renewal hours.
