Sorry for the delay - busy, busy, busy.
 
Reversing rings:
- reverse the lens,
- put the reversing adapter on the front (naw back) of it,
- put the adapter on the camera. 
- Put the camera on a mini-tripod and
- aim it low and move it closer and closer to something stationary until you see, suddenly, a super magnified view of your subject. 
 
The challenges are
 
(a) focus is ONLY on a really, really close subject, and
 
(2) anything closer or farther is w-a-y out of focus so yo'll se nothing even approximate until you actually find the ONE plane that's in focus!

I am trying to setup my Minolta X-9 to take close-up photos. I really
don't understand how these reversing rings work and will they work with my
standard lenses.
