Hi F..,

Your challenge is an Irfanview challenge - FIRST in the main Irfanview screen, select: Options, Properties, PlugIns, and uncheck:

[ ] Load half size image (faster)!

Then when you batch convert, Irfanview will use the full size of the original RAW image.  I select images in the Irfanview [T]humnail feature, then select the batch for selected images.

Bear in mind that Irfanview ONLY outputs 8-bit files, so you're loosing the 12-bit clarity possible from the files.  Even the Minolta DiMage Viewer Utility is capable of outputting 16-bit TIF files, if that matters to you.

Also, let's share this with our fellow photographers on the internet at http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00IfFH okay?

Let us know how it goes next!

Dear Mr. Monahon,

Greetings from F.. C.. of Hong Kong. I found your email address
when I followed the thread:

http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00IfFH

which discusses raw image processing software. Your advice in that
thread is very useful, and I hope you don't mind if I ask you the
following question.

I have a Minolta 5D for 1 year but only recently start to shoot in RAW
mode. I have an older version of Photoimpact which can edit TIFF or JPG files nicely (and I have used it for years when I was shooting in jpg
and so am quite familiar with the program, more than Photoshop), but not reading RAW files, so I have tried to batch convert RAW to TIFF using Irfanview before editing the images.

However, the resulting TIFF files converted from RAW by Irfanview are
always 1508 pixels x 1004 pixels large.

On the other hand, if I use DIMAGE master lite (the very slow software
accompanying the purchase of 5D) the TIFF files it converted from RAW
are always 3008 x 2000 pixels large.

Since you also use Irfanview I know that I must be wrong setting some
parameters when using it. Could you please tell me how you do it? What
do you enter in "options" and "set advanced options" boxes under "batch conversion" menu of Irfanview?

Thanks a lot for reading this mail. I would be grateful if you can
reply. Your suggestions to my post-processing techniques are welcome.

Yours sincerely,

F.. C..
from Hong Kong
