Question: How does the Telegram app make money?

How are you going to make money out of this?
We believe in fast and secure messaging that is also 100% free.
Commercial companies frequently face the need to compromise their
values for financial gain. This is why we made Telegram a
non-commercial project. Telegram is not intended to bring revenue, it
will never sell ads or accept outside investment. It also cannot be
sold. We're not building a “user base”, we are building a messenger
for the people.
Pavel Durov, who shares our vision, supplied Telegram with a generous
donation through his Digital Fortress fund, so we have quite enough
money for the time being. If Telegram runs out, we'll invite our users
to donate or add non-essential paid options.

Answer1: It doesn't. Telegram has a quiet large FAQ, in which it is
written that Pavel Durov, who is the founder of the messaging service
itself, as well as a multi-millionaire, supplied it with a “generous
donation” so it has enough money for the time being.
If they ever run out of the money, they “will introduce non-essential
paid options to support the infrastructure and finance developer
salaries. But making profits will never be an end-goal for Telegram

Answer2: Telegram currently doesn't have a business model... yet. It
is a free network with emphasis on encryption of data. As of 7 months
ago Paval Durov announced that Telegram will advance with payments
within the app. The payments are currently being tested in Russia, and
if successful then this could be an introduction to Telegram's
business model.
But at the end of the day for Paval Durov Telegram isn't about making
a lot of money from his Telegram app but would of course like to keep
his project sustainable.
As for WhatsApp, since Facebook bought it, it has been free to use.
Perhaps they have a similar idea for WhatsApp? Except currently the
WhatsApp API is not available to the public so there is not the same
opportunities for third parties as platforms like Messenger and
Telegram.

Answer3: You can check out this official Telegram answer: Telegram – a
new era of messaging. But to sum it up for you, they're currently
living off a funding from some huge donation/investment that was made.
If they find themselves without efficient funding at some point,
they'll turn to user donations (like Wikipedia) or in-app purchases
for extra features.
Basically - in the app world, the user-base is EVERYTHING. If you have
many users, you're all set to make LOTS of money.

Answer4: Telegram does not sell your data to other companies. Such
apps have an initial stage where they focus on getting more users
providing great features to which you will get hooked and then at a
later stage either make some of these features premium or add new
features that cost small amounts of money. Like extra storage or fancy
stickers etc. Another approach is the hope that you get bought over by
another company for your userbase. In the app world userbase is
everything! With which even if you have a great app or product you
wont make any money!
