Madhu and self visited Kadenthethi last week. Madhu was nice enough to accompany on my request. I am enclosing with this few photos taken taken there. Photos are clear since I did not carry a regular camera and shot through my Lumia phone.
Kadenthethi is a very small village now, but finds a place in Google Maps & Directions.May be even smaller then how it was 100 years back. We were told few decades back, there were 40-50 brahmin families living there. Now just five families, One Iyengar family and four Iyer families. The fore fathers ( four generations back - may be during the child hood of late Vedandachary) built the existing Iyyanar Temple.
We also saw the lone Sannidhi of Perumal Koil, which is just 200 meters away from the Iyyanar Temple. The deity is of Sri Varadarajar with Sri Devi and Boo Devi. As per Mr.Sampath Iyengar, a village elder, who retired from govt service and whose last four generations lived at Kadenthethi, few decades back, they found a lone deity filled with snake neat with just face visible. They then cleared it and placed in a newly constructed shelter by adding Sri Devi and Boo Devi. The same four families which take care of the Iyyanar temple on rotation takes care of the Varadaraja Perumal also. Daily Aradhanai is taking place. But this god is much poorer then the famous Iyyanar who gets large visitors each Saturday. May be hundred year back, those iyengar familes lived here could have visited/work shipped him
During 1870, a famous scholar and devotee of Lord called Varda Vedanchary from this village, became Andavan Swamigal of Andavan Ashramam when he was 75 yrs old!( Todays Andavan swamigal is sixth from him) and he was known as Kadenthethi Andavan Swamigal. How ever no one at Kadenthethi is able to remember him since this happened some 120-130 years back.
Kadenthethi is 80 kms from Tanjore. By cab it takes 2 hours to reach. It is on the Thalainayar road of east cost road - Thiruthurai poondi. One can come to Mannargudi by train from Chennai and can take a cab (one hour drive) to Kadenthethi. Beware Kadenthethi does not even have a tea shop! So have enough stock of food/water etc.
One reason why all the Brahmins migrated from kadenthethi, after selling their agri land ( like KVV did) could be due to lack of water at kaveri which flows through the village ever since KRS Dam was built during the 30s. Being the fag end ( Bay of Bengal is just 70-80 kms from kadenthethi) of Kaveri, water flow is very low even when Mettur Dam is open.
The Iyyanar temple opens at 6 Am on Saturdays, which is like a ' Thiruvizha' for Kadenthethi. On other days it opens at 10 am. So it would be good to visit Mannargudi Rajagopala Swamy temple and also Perumal Temple at Vazhuvur.( Remember the famous Vazhuvur Ramaiya Pillai?) en route to Kadenthethi, if you start at 7am from Tanjore or 8 Am from Mannargudi.
Last but not the least. the five Brahmin families of Kadenthethi is planing to do Khumbabishekam for both Iyyanar temple and also for the Perumal temple. I suggest whose so ever is interested, can send what ever they can for this and for the sake of our fore fathers village.
