Foods lower in cholesterol could actually be more effective in
managing diabetes than low-fat foods alone. A study performed in
Canada found that a number of individuals who were advised to consume
a diet of cholesterol-lowering foods, including nots and soy milk,
achieved an LDL cholesterol reduction of over 13%, compared with a 3%
decrease for those individuals told to follow a low-fat, high-fiber
diet. The study found that food with viscous fiber, such as barley and
oats, and food with plant sterols, such as enhanced margarine, are
among the most likely to lower one's cholesterol. Source: American
