Hi John Henry.
Because of my interest in the prophecy of Revelation 13 and the number
666, I have seen various forms of English gematria over the years, in
books and on the Web, including the form of gematria you show further
down in your message, which was briefly mentioned in Del Washburn's
book "Theomatics," published in 1977. I have also tried out some
methods of my own (some of which result in very large numbers) and
wrote a gematria calculator program for my Atari 800 computer back in
the early 1980's. I haven't had the time and energy to get re-
involved in computer programming lately. However, I still fool around
with gematria, just using a pocket calculator.

Specifically, it says, "let him that hath understanding count the
number of the beast." Yes, "him that hath understanding" could mean
someone who is generally wise about all things. But in context at the
end of this chapter of prophecy, it could mean more specifically
someone who understands this specific chapter, and understands what
the two beasts and the image symbolize. Thus anyone who honestly
thinks or believes he (or she?) understands the prophecy is called
upon to count the number of the beast.
So if you think you understand this chapter of prophecy, yet you
haven't counted the number of the beast, why not? You were called to
do so! And at the other extreme, if you have a lot of gematria
calculations to show, things that add up to 666, but didn't understand
the chapter as a whole, why are you wasting your time with all those
calculations? I don't mean you, or anyone else, specifically. I am
just thinking out loud about some of the implications I see in the
words in Rev 13:18.
As well as gematria, I like to fool around with anagrams. For those
who don't know, an anagram is just a meaningful message found by
rearranging the letters of some word or name or phrase. Here are a
couple of anagrams I found, with the help of a commercial program
called Anagram Genius:
"Him that hath understanding" = [quoted from Rev 13:18]
The man had truth and insight.
He'd an insight, truth and math.
Men hadn't had a truth insight.
Anagrams are are especially interesting because no matter what
numerical values one assigns to the letters of the alphabet, the
gematria sums for anagrams will always be equal. That's because one
is just adding up the same numbers in a different order. For example,
using the multiples of 6 system you have shown, each of the above
would add up to 1614.
I think these next examples you show of words and phrases that add up
to 666 using your system are all good clues about the nature of the
beast:

> Lustful = 666 (1 John 2:16-17)

[snip]
And some of the following might also be good clues:

> Falling Away = 666 (2 Thess 2:3)
> Other Gods = 666 (Deut 5:7-9)
> Catholic Liar = 666 (Acts 4:12; 2 Tim 2:5; Ex 20:3-5)

But no one should get the mistaken impression from what you have shown
here that the number 666, as it occurs in your (or Dr. Church's)
system of gematria associates unambiguously to evil, sinful, beastly
things. For example, after spending a little time fooling with my
pocket calculator, I found these sums, using your same system:
God of Israel = 666
Israel of God = 666
Mankind's God = 666

If anything, perhaps what we are seeing here is a hint that the 666
beast's "mouth speaking great things and blasphemies" may have
something to do with gematria calculations, because gematria tends to
mix and equate the sacred and the profane.

And just as I found some seemingly good things that add up to 666,
without much effort, I'm sure one could find lots of bad things that
add up to 888. Here are a couple of easy ones:
Satan's messiah = 888
Satan's ruler = 888
The problem is that gematria is ambiguous:
Jesus = 444 = Lucifer
God's = 270 = Lies
It would be nice to have a gematria system so perfect that each number
had a unique meaning, either good or evil. But if such a thing
exists, this isn't it. And neither have I myself found a really
reliable gematria system for English. How could such a thing even
exist in our sinful world? How could it exist, when our languages
have been confused ever since the tower of Babel?
But now I must reveal what is really my major complaint with the
multiples-of-6 system you have shown here. How does it logically
follow from the fact that man was created on the 6th day of creation,
that we should multiply the counting values for our letters (A=1, B=2,
C=3, ... , Z=26) by 6, and assign A=6, B=12, C=18, etc? It makes no
sense at all, in my opinion.
By way of analogy, suppose I owed you 18 dollars. Suppose I said,
"This is a human debt, so I will repay it using the multiples of 6
system, because 6 is the number of man." And then I counted out three
dollar bills, and put them in your hand, saying, "Six, twelve,
eighteen. There you are. You are repaid in full. Thanks for lending
me the money." I'd say that if I did that, I would be cheating you.
And somewhat similarly, I would say that counting out A=6, B=12, C=18,
etc., is a bit of a swindle. It is a contrived and illogical
numerological system without any precedent or any solid foundation.
And what it obviously results in is that every word and every phrase
has a gematria value which is obviously a multiple of 6. (In case you
hadn't noticed, 888 is also a multiple of 6: 888 = 6 x 148.) So 5
out of every 6 of the counting numbers will not even exist in this
multiples of 6 system.
In other words, suppose I am interested in the number 777, and want to
see what words might add up to that number. Sorry, but that number is
not a multiple of 6. It is impossible to find any words that will add
up to that number, using the multiples of 6 system. Similarly, there
will be no 111, or 333, or 555, or 999. In fact, no odd numbers of
any kind, because 6 is even. And no 100, 200, 400, 500, 700, 800 or
1000, because those numbers are even, but not multiples of 3. The
only numbers allowed are even and a multiple of 3, because 6 = 2 x 3.
And no 1111, which is a pretty looking number, which is neither even
nor a multiple of 3.
I would say that it sure looks like the A=6, B=12, C=18, etc. gematria
system was contrived especially to make it 6 times as easy to find a
sum of 666 as it ought to be. It is like putting on rose colored
glasses before you go searching for a rose. When you put on the rose
colored glasses, you can look at a white flower, and say, "Sure looks
like a rose to me!" With the multiples of 6 system, you are
metaphorically putting on "sixy colored glasses," because you want to
see 666.
If you still think the multiples of 6 gematria system is valid, even
after all my complaining, let me at least show you an easier way to do
your calculations. Instead of using the multiples of 6, just use the
ordinary counting values A=1 to Z=26. And then look for words and
phrases that add up to 111, realizing that since it adds up to 111
this way, it will add up to 666 when using multiples of 6. Or if you
are looking for 888, look for 148 instead, because 888 = 6 x 148.
That's the way I did the gematria calculations I showed above.
If you were counting eggs which were all boxed in boxes holding a half
dozen, wouldn't it be foolish to count the eggs individually, instead
of counting them by the box? 111 boxes equals 666 eggs. Why work
with the arithmetic of individual eggs when they are all in boxes of
6?
I think there is SOME validity to the multiples of 6 system you are
using because it is related so simply to the simple counting numbers
A=1 to Z=26. All that's wrong with it is that it is giving you a
highly exaggerated view of the significance of the results you are
finding. So when looking for what you have previously regarded as
666, use the simple counting values instead and look for 111. Then
recognize that something that sums to 111 could be a valid hint about
666, because there is a perfect harmony between 666 and 111. (In
music, one tone is a perfect harmonic of another tone if the frequency
or wavelength of one is a perfect multiple of the other.)
Here are some little coincidences that I have regarded as possible
small corroborations of the validity of the simple counting values A=1
to Z=26:
74 = English = Gematria = Jesus = Jewish = Y'shua = Messiah = Ruler =
The King
(Y'shua is the name that the Jews for Jesus use, because it
approximates the original pronunciation of his name.)
But of course, the gematria is still ambiguous and contradictory
because
74 = Satan's = Lucifer = of a Devil
Those 74s would all be 444 using the multiples of 6 system.
We also have,
82 = Numbered = Counted = Calculated = Perfected = Correct
333 = Correct values for the letters
= of the alphabet are found by counting.
= A is the first letter of the alphabet.
= Numerology tells the truth
And here are some gematria coincidences along the lines of what I
think the prophecy means:
275 = Six hundred sixty six
= The seven-headed ten-horned beast
= The body of knowledge of science
201 = Six sixty-six
= Beast or antichrist
= The antichrist beast
= Science and Technology
= Technological sciences
= Knowledge is power
= Technological power
= Science's beast power
= The image of mathematics
= The human computer
= Holy Bible computer
But as you can see, it takes a fairly long string of letters to
actually add up to 666 when we are using the simple counting values
A=1 to Z=26:
Six hundred and sixty six, the number of the trinity of sixes = 666
(That would be 3996 = 6 x 666 in your multiples of 6 system.)
So it would sure be nice to have a reasonable system of gematria where
we could find hints or corroborations about the 666 beast in single
words or short phrases.
If you are familiar with the gematria of ancient Hebrew and Greek, you
should know that the same numerical pattern for the alphabet appears
in each. They start off assigning a value of 1 to the 1st letter, 2
to the 2nd, etc. up to the 10th letter, but after that add increments
of 10 until they hit 100. Then the increment changes to 100 for the
remaining letters at the end of the alphabet. (They also add some
special letters to finish the numbering up to 900.) Here's a table
that shows both alphabets:
Gematria Key for Greek and Hebrew
http://www.geocities.com/athens/parthenon/7069/key-1.html
Please don't worry about the fact that this is an occultish web page
put up by a follower of Aleister Crowley. At least he's got the
gematria values correct.
Now I'd say that it is obvious that either the Greeks copied the
numerical pattern from the Hebrews, or vice-versa. Or both copied
from some other culture. (The scholarly concensus seems to be that
this pattern started with the Greeks.) Anyway, there is clearly some
copying going on here, so there is a precedent which suggests simply
copying the ancient numerical pattern onto our modern English
alphabet.
So is it appropriate to appropriate the ancient numerical pattern, and
apply it to the English alphabet, when seeking to count the number of
the beast? If we appropriate the ancient pattern, we will assign
values ranging from A=1 to Z=800. We will now be looking at the world
through "Greek-Hebrew colored glasses," so to speak. And we will
find,
Appropriate = 666

great beast") add up to 666 using the Greek letter values. That seems
to be a nice corroboration that counting the number of the beast has
something to do with gematria. In trying to imitate the spirit of
that, I found that "Man's mega therion" adds up to 666 in English.]
I could go on and on with this. And I have interesting results in
other numerological systems I've played with. But it still wouldn't
be a scientific proof that my ideas about Revelation 13 are correct,
because just showing cherry-picked examples that fit one's pet theory
does not constitute a scientific proof.
However, I'll just mention in closing what my theory is. Yes, I think
I have at least a basic understanding of this chapter of prophecy. I
believe the two beasts of Revelation 13 symbolize man's science and
technology. Modern technology is the second beast, the one that works
all the great signs or marvels. And by the signs that technology
works in the presence of first beast, science, it deceives humans into
idolizing science to such an extent that humans actually make a graven
image in the likeness of science, some sort of talking computer or
artificial intelligence that personifies all man's scientific
knowledge. Then, humans will wind up worshipping and obeying this
"Omniscient" AI, the beast whose number is 666.
My theory about Revelation 13 began with the recognition that the
"fire from heaven" sign in Rev 13:13 was fulfilled in 1952 when man's
technology created the first hydrogen bomb. The H-bomb uses hydrogen
fusion, the same type of fire that lights up the sun and the other
stars in the heavens. By recreating this type of fire here on earth,
our technology made the heavenly fire come down to earth. The idea
that large bombs are typically dropped from planes flying high in the
heavens also helps. While the first H-bomb was developed and tested
by the USA, the most powerful H-bomb was detonated by the USSR in
1961. That one was equivalent to 50 million tons of TNT, a truly
awesome demonstration of brute technological power. And it was a
fully operational weapon dropped from the heavens by a high flying
jet.
Even if I am wrong in thinking that the first H-bomb tests constituted
a fulfillment of Rev 13:13, the H-bomb has at least set a new standard
for the second beast of Rev 13 to match and surpass. I.e., if modern
technology is not really the second beast of Rev 13, then when the
real second beast comes, it/he must make fire come down from heaven in
a way which is even more spectacular and powerful than an H-bomb
explosion. Otherwise, people who worship man's science, looking to
man's science as the highest authority, are justified in saying to the
beast, "Why should we worship what you want us to worship, when our
science and technology is more powerful than you?"
Sincerely,
Judson Thomas Pewther
