Hi Friends and Neighbors,
 
I am sending you this as a friendly reminder that the HPNA is having it's monthly meeting THURSDAY NIGHT, instead of our regular Wednesday night, because the DCNA (Downtown Coalition of Neighborhood Assoc) is hosting a Forum of the At-Large Council Candidates tonight at Ferris High School. (see details below in our newsletter).
 
See you tomorrow night @ 7:30 at the Cordero School auditorium! (Cordero located on Erie between 8th & 9th, use school's middle door)  Thanks!

DOWNTOWN COALITION OF NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS (DCNA) IS SPONSORING A FINAL AT-LARGE CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE FORUM

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2011,   7 – 9 pm

FERRIS H.S., 35 COLGATE STREET at Brunswick

The forum will be moderated by Historic Paulus Hook Assoc Board Member, Dr. Jonathan Wharton,

Professor of Political Science at Steven’s Institute of Technology.

Popular questions asked on the candidates Facebook page ( created by Candice Osborne in conjunction with the Jersey City Independent) will be included. 

Short videos will be posted on Facebook following the forum.

HPHA Board member Stephanie Daniels is producing the event.

CORDERO COMMUNITY SCHOOL, 9TH AND ERIE

Guest presenter:  JERSEY CITY MEDICAL CENTER’s LIBERTY HEALTH FOUNDATION

Our Jersey City Medical Center is Hudson County’s First Responder in case of a county-wide emergency.

They provide numerous services in their state of the art facility and their “Enhancing Life” program arranges for tours and outreach to the community.  Please come to this meeting for an audio/visual behind-the-scenes tour of the Jersey City Medical Center and to learn about their recent accomplishments and vision for the future.

Recap of National Make a Difference Dig, aka Jersey City’s “THE BIG DIG”, Sat 10/22/11

 This citywide event was a major collaboration by Mayor Healy, the JC Parks Coalition, City Hall, the Div of Cultural Affairs, the Dept of Public Works.  17,000 bulbs were planted in 80 locations throughout the city.  After the hard work, all volunteers were invited for lunch and free admission by the Liberty Science Center.

 A big THANK YOU goes to the Group Captains, Co-Captains and volunteers who turned out for this enormous event

 Enos Jones Park Captain Jenny Jobarteh organized 6 volunteers and 12 Daisy Scouts. Prior to the Big Dig, they tilled and prepared beds for planting 200 narcissus bulbs in the raised bed at the Brunswick St entrance.

 Hamilton Park Captain Jan Nordland and more than 50 volunteers consisting of neighbors, students, parents & children from the Garden Preschool, Hamilton Park Montessori School, Cordero School, the Scandinavian School, and McNair Academic H.S. They planted 600 bulbs, weeded, and picked up trash in the park. 


Watch for the spring blooms in the circular community garden in the SE corner of the park, adjacent to the splash park, the playground East entrance, and along the South walkway.

 The HPNA donated water and juice boxes for the volunteers at Hamilton Park and Enos Jones Park.

 Don’t forget to renew your membership for 2012!  Submit a request for a membership form by e-mail or pick one up at Walt Sidaroff’s Liquor Store on 8th/Jersey Ave. HPNA membership entitles you to discounts from local merchants. You do not need to be a resident of the neighborhood to become a member.

 Would you like to get involved with the community?  If you have been an HPNA member for a year and have attended 3 meetings, you can run for a Trustee seat on the Board of Directors.  Submit your name to hpn...@gmail.com

East District Police Dept alert:

There is an uptick in auto break-ins.  This is a crime of opportunity.  DO NOT LEAVE ANY ELECTRONIC DEVICES OR PERSONAL ITEMS IN YOUR CAR.  Thieves will break in even if they see a GPS suction cup mark on the windshield.

Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner Drives:

 The East District on 7th Street (West of Manila) is collecting frozen turkeys. Hard Grove Café will prepare the turkeys and host Thanksgiving meal for the needy.

 Bergen/Lafayette activist Bill Gent is reaching out to the community for help in their annual Thanksgiving meal outreach.  Meals are prepared and delivered to the homeless and homebound.  The Port Authority Police help to distribute meals to homeless who live below ground.  Week of 10/31 – 11/4 Water will be turned off in dog runs and fountain.

 Doggie Poop bags for the dispensers in the both Dog Runs.

 Latex gloves in a lockbox available to parents and nannies for trash pick up in the playground.  Please email hpn...@gmail.com with gloves in the subject line if you’d like a supply to carry in your stroller or bag when you’re in the park.

 More trash cans have been acquired by the DPW, but concrete pads are yet to be installed.

 Annual Police Dept Toy Drive.  Drop off new and unwrapped toys at the East District 7th Street office or Headquarters at 8th Erie.
