When we start looking for spring bulbs (to plant in the fall) please
bear the following in mind:

NOT SAFE
Autumn crocus a.k.a. Meadow saffron or Naked-ladies, (latin name
Colchicum autumnale) which looks a lot like crocus but blooms in
autumn is highy toxic and may be fatal if eaten.

Scilla species: Two-leaved squill, autumn scilla, Cuban lily, Siberian
squill, blue squill,Tubergen squill - some of these are highly toxic
and could be fatal according to some sources.

Spring blooming crocus (Crocus spp) - most sources regard them as safe
but others say they are toxic.

SAFE
Some of the following could cause nausea/vomiting if eaten in large
quantities BUT should be safe:

Daffodils, Narcissus, Jonquils (Narcissus spp)
Grape hyacinths (Muscari spp) - no vomiting or stomach upset if
ingested
Hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis)
Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis)
Tulips (Tulipa spp)

Please post any other info you might have!

Hi Everyone,

The bulbs being planted citywide are tulips and daffodils for THE BIG DIG.

The BIG DIG bulb planting location was chosen by the JC Parks Coalition and Director Rodney Hadley and is located to the right of the Enos Jones entrance on Brunswick in the raised bed where the John DeSalvo plaque is located. Thanks.

Best,
Jan
