When we scout for spring bulbs (to plant asap) please
bear the following in mind:
NOT SAFE
Autumn crocus a.k.a. Meadow saffron or Naked-ladies, (latin name
Colchicum autumnale) which looks a lot like crocus but blooms in
autumn is _highy toxic_ and may be _fatal_ if eaten.
Scilla species: Two-leaved squill, autumn scilla, Cuban lily,
Siberian
squill, blue squill,Tubergen squill - some of these are highly toxic
and could be fatal according to some sources.
Spring blooming crocus (Crocus spp) - most sources regard them as
safe
but others say they are toxic.
SAFE
Some of the following could cause nausea/vomiting if eaten in large
quantities BUT should be safe:
Daffodils, Narcissus, Jonquils (Narcissus spp)
Grape hyacinths (Muscari spp) - no vomiting or stomach upset if
ingested
Hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis)
Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis)
Tulips (Tulipa spp)
Could cause pain in the mouth if eaten BUT should be safe:
Anemone Blanda, Windflower, the low-growing, spring-blossoming kind.
