"The Killer Shrews" (1959) The bigger than life Captain Thorne Sherman
(James Best) and his mate are delivering monthly supplies to a remote
island. They arrive just ahead of a hurricane that is bearing down on
them. The supplies are for a scientist and his staff. Unknown to the
good Captain the experiments conducted by the group have gone horribly
awry. The end result is massive shrews with a bad attitude and they're
hungry as well as poisonous. Now these "shrews" looked for the world
to me like regular ol' K-9's wearing shag carpet with rat-like tails.
The adobe house begins to fall apart due to the storm and the shrews
have easy access. Ken Curtis (Festus of Gunsmoke fame) is great as the
drunken antagonist to Sherman.....he produced as well. Cliches abound
and Sherman gets the girl in the end, even though it takes him the
entire movie to realize she's throwing herself at him. He's to busy
being "brave". A scant 69 minute running time.
