THE MADDEST STORY EVER TOLD-1968-starts off with a great theme song-then we are told of the merrye syndrome, named after the merrye family-

when the children so afflicted(inbreeding) reach a certain age, the body keeps growing, the brain and mind devolves, maybe even back t an age whem mankind was nothnig but savages, cannibals maybe.

a messenger arrives at the merrye household.  titus has been dead for a few years.  his chiildren elizabeth, virginia, and ralph(sid haig) have been looked after by the family caretaker, bruno(lon chaney).

the messenger encounters virginia.  she likes to play spider.  he's trapped in her web and she stings him-with butcher knives.

 

the message was from a lawyer.  2 cousins and the attorney and secretary will be arriving for the disposition of the estate.  the cousins will be appointed guardians and naturally get their hands on the merrye fortune.

this does not sit well with bruno or the children.

 

after the "guests" arrive they want to stay for dinner, despite bruno's protests and warning that they are used to meager fare.  they are vegetarians-eating meat speeds up the process-plus it's "dead meat" elizabeth proclaims with a look of disgust.

ralph has trapped a cat for the guest's dining pleasure.--the salad and other dishes are something to behold.

 

bed time-needless to say things get even crazier.  oh and there's the 2 aunts and uncle in the basement.  daddy is dead but not forgotten-his skeleton his in bed, pajama clad.

 

wonderfully warped flick.  completely off the wall.
