Dear Students and Friends,

A chat with a student the other day made me aware that there are many of you who are unaware of all the opportunities there are to study, work, and live in Japan. Let me mention a few here and feel free to come see me for more information. Note that each of these opportunities have certain terms and limitations. Some, for example, are only open to Australian residents:

USYD Exchange Program: For the cost of your standard USYD tuition, you could study at any number of excellent universities with whom we maintain exchange relations. More information at this link:
http://www.arts.usyd.edu.au/departs/japanese/undergrad/exchange.shtml

Monbukagakusho Scholarship
: These are very competitive Japanese government scholarships for undergraduates to spend one year at a Japanese university. All tuition is covered and you receive a generous stipend of over $1000/month. Check this link under "Japanese Studies Category." The scholarship is closed for this year but next year's information should be posted soon:

The "research category" is open to graduates but these are generally only awared to people in PhD program.

JET Program: The Japan Exchange Teaching Programme is perhaps the best way to get a job teaching English in Japan after gratuation. There is also a position for people with high proficiency in Japanese called CIR where they work as international coordinators at local government offices:
