Dear Friends, Students and Colleagues,

Many of you responded to my survey on the fingerprinting of visitors
to Japan from 20 November. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.
Someone, wisely, pointed out that the survey didn't include an "I
approve" choice. I guess that shows my bias. See a Japanese news clip
on how the fingerprinting machine works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?

It's whaling season again and I've posted a blog with my thoughts on
the topic along with another survey. Not only is Japan expanding its
operation this year to include sperm whales, it's requesting the
protection of the Australian and New Zealand navies against the
activities of environmental activists. Remember last year one of the
Japanese whaling vessels was damaged by activists so badly that they
had to cancel the mission? Ha ha.

Anyway, please check out the blog and post your comments. My
questions include: Why is whaling so bad? and, would you try whale
meat if given the chance? Let me know at:

PS: There's still time to vote on fingerprinting.
