Hello Detroit!

Here's an article by Mike Green in the Huffington Post about
innovations in the digital space, but he questions where are the
entrepreneurs of color?

Are we there, but yet invisible? Take a look at the article and post
your comments.

Mike has agreed to be on our development team for the Journalism That
Matters: North Carolina effort! So let's help fuel this pre-conference
push to get attention -- and funding -- to entrepreneurs of color!

Also, we're forming our planning team for North Carolina and are close
on a venue. If you're interested in being part of this exciting
sequel;-), please let me know at michelle(at)michelleferrier.com!

Wow! That was a great article by Mike Green. After attending the
Innovation 100 event at the University of Missouri as part of our
Journalism that Matters grant prize, I too was amazed that (besides my
husband and I) there were no other African Americans represented. There
are some awesome things being done out there, and I too ask the question
as a journalist and business owner of color along with my husband---where
do we start in pushing the African Americans who do have the talent and
ideas, and how do we educate the younger generation on how to get in the
game?

I am excited Mike will join the JTM crew...count me in as well!!!

Hi all,
The event that Lori has found in Detroit mirrors efforts nationwide modeled after a book called "Slow Money" by Woody Tasch. It explains a model for local investors to invest in local start-up and ongoing enterprises. These efforts typically offer low-cost loans directly from the "loan cooperative" of anywhere from $100 (microloans) to XX??? Who knows? Interest rates are typically 1-3% or a bit higher, but lower than traditional bank rates.

I am applying for one of these slow money loans from a group nearby focused on local food and sustainability. The investor(s) get to shape the terms, but they are GREAT sources of startup funds if you can find these investors interested in your niche. They are like angel investors, except they don't take any equity share in your company...just a straight-up loan.

So look for these options in your own region. And if they aren't there, start at the local business incubators and arts supporters and others and see if you can get a slow money group started. If anyone's interested, I think a group local to me is one of the first in the country to really put Woody's ideas into full-fledged operation. I'd be happy to put you in touch with them.

Bloom where you're planted,
Michelle
