Job Position: Local Staff - Political Division Organization: Consulate General of Japan in New York Salary/Hourly Rate: 50k/year (depending on experience) Where: New York, NY
Description: The Consulate General of Japan in New York is currently seeking to hire a locally employed staff for the Political and General Division. The deadline for all job applications is 6/21/2024.

A. Working hours: • Monday through Friday, 9:15am – 6:00pm (Lunch Break 12:30pm – 1:30pm) *This position is on-site.
B. Role of the Political and General Divisions: • The Political Division closely monitors U.S. domestic and foreign policy. On the domestic side, we place particular emphasis on the following states/territories: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands • The General Division coordinates with all other divisions on different issues arising from the activities of the Consulate General of Japan
C. Responsibilities: • Cooperate with staff members on different tasks commissioned in the Political and General Division • Conduct in-depth research and provide reports on: • Political, economic, and diplomatic status and developments of the states and major cities covered • Electoral matters at federal, state, and city level • Create and update a database on relevant political, economic, and diplomatic issues • Attend and report on relevant seminars at think tanks, academic institutions, NGOs, etc. • Coordinate with all other divisions on in-house matters and activities of the Consulate General • Arrange appointments for staff members and visitors from Japan • Respond to telephone and e-mail inquiries related to matters of the Political and General Divisions • Administrative duties, including support for Consulate receptions and other events (occasional after-hours work may be required) • Translation or interpretation of English-Japanese if he or she has proficiency in both languages • Other duties as deemed necessary, including assisting staff of other divisions on different matters
D. Qualifications: • Must be a U.S. citizen or citizen of other nationalities with permanent residency (green card holder) • Bachelor’s degree required / Graduate degree preferred (work or study experience on US politics, international relations or related fields is a plus) • Interest in and knowledge of political relations between Japan and the U.S., including Asia • Excellent writing, research, communication and organizational skills (deadline-oriented and able to manage multiple projects) • Highly cooperative and polite with others. Punctuality is essential. • Business English proficiency required • Japanese language skills preferred
