"JASC Presents in Hiroshima" Report

Dear All

 Hello. I am Sayaka. Now we, Team of JP in Hiroshima, finally held the event in Hiroshima. Our theme is " Youth Insights to Hiroshima."
 I would like to share how the event was in Japanese (Josh will send English-ver soon.)(If I can, I would like to translate it later.)

1,  Event
　参加人数約50人（報道関係者含む）、その内学生約35人の参加者が来場し、13:00より企画を開始しました。
　基調講演では水本和実先生より、ヒロシマや核問題を論じる際、多数存在する論点を整理し、冷静に議論する大切さをご講演いただきました。それをふまえ、第二部では広島まで育っ渡邉恭子さんをモデレーターに「ヒロシマには外部からの多様な視点が必要なのでは」という疑問を主眼に、学生の視点からパネルディスカッションを行いました。盛島正人さんが沖縄、広島、平和のシンボルからの脱却へという内容で、川口耕一朗さんがアメリカでの高校生活の経験から日本とアメリカの核教育の違いを、Joshua Shlachetがヒロシマが日本の戦争被害の中でも特別なシンボルとなった理由やこれからのヒロシマに必要な外部の視点について、上野良輔さんが安全保障の観点からPSIという具体例を用いて、それぞれ発表されました。
　渡邉さんの方から現在の広島の印象についての質問をパネリストに投げかけた後、会場を巻き込んだOpen Questionとなりました。盛島くんの同世代の学生が今の広島をどう思っているのかという逆質問をきっかけに、広島の学生からの活発な意見や質問が飛び交いました。その中で目立ったのは、核兵器の存在を前提とした安全保障の議論をすることは、実際に核兵器の惨状を経験されている被爆者の方を目の前にすると難しいという意見や、従来の被爆者の視点を中心にしたヒロシマの平和教育にも評価すべき点があったはず、という意見でした。
　時間により議論は途中で打ち切らざるを得ませんでしたが、ディスカッション後の懇親会では、パネリストと観客がざっくばらんに議論を交わし、交流することができた。また企画の最後に第61回日米学生会議の広報も行い、観客の高校生の中から大学生になったら是非参加したい、大学生からも参加したいという声をいただきました。また社会人の方々からも、会議自体には参加できなくても、今回のような議論には是非参加したいという声をいただきました。

2,  Action toward the Society
　「日米学生会議 in 広島」は広報段階で18日中国新聞朝刊地方面に掲載され、当日の模様は23日6時の地方放送局RCC、TSSニュースに、7時のNHK広島のニュース、という地方放送局3社に報道されました。また24日朝刊には中国新聞、毎日新聞、朝日新聞、読売新聞の4社に取り上げられ、前者2社は写真付きで大きく掲載されました。RCCについては

3,  「JASC Presents in Hiroshima」
　「日米学生会議in広島」は新宮清香（全体責任者）、渡邉恭子（広島責任者）上野良輔（広報、パネリスト）、廣瀬裕子（アドバイザー）、松田浩道（アドバイザー）、横山雄一（広報）の広島企画メンバーを中心に企画し、その他、57回杉田道子さん広島の現地学生やNGOの方、平和記念資料館の職員の方々など、たくさんのご協力をいただきました。さらに当日は大井あゆみさん、竹内菜緒さん、田中豪さん、Kayoko Hirataさん、Jon-Michael-Durkinさん、松田浩道さんが応援に駆けつけてくださり、上記パネリストの皆さんと共に企画を行うことができました。
　「JASC Presents」全体に関しては、盛島正人さん、Joshua Shlachetさん、後藤昌也さんから合計80000円という寄付金をいただき、61JEC広報の援助も得て、ここまで企画を行うことができました。さらに企画全体として61EC、川口耕一朗さん、武田尚樹さん、竹内菜緒さん、渡邉ともねさんに多大なるご協力をいただき、多くのJASCerから励ましの言葉もいただいてきました。
　この場をお借りして、みなさまに厚く御礼申し上げます。

4,  The Result of Questionnaire

[Josh Schlachet, 59th & 60th]

Dear Fellow JASCers,

As Sayaka has already mentioned, I am pleased to report that our first
"JASC Presents" event took place this past December 23rd, marking the
official launch of the program. Taking the theme "Youth Perspectives
on Hiroshima," and focusing specifically on new student perspectives
on issues of nuclear weapons, the event was appropriately held in
Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Museum. Our audience of roughly 50 people
spanned a wide range of ages and backgrounds, including high school,
university and graduate students, members of the local community and
several generations of recent JASCers. We were also able to reach an
even broader audience through media coverage, including local
newspapers and TV stations such as NHK.

Thanks to our panelists, we were able to accomplish our goal of
presenting diverse and divergent views on nuclear issues, memory and
historical appreciation in the present. Our panel began with Mr.
Masato Morishima (JASC 60) who discussed Hiroshima's nuclear activism
through the legacy of conflict in Okinawa, drawing into question the
various ways that such locations of memory respond to contemporary
versus historical concerns. Next, Mr. Koichiro Kawaguchi (JASC 58,
JASC 59 JEC Chair) described his experiences with nuclear education as
an exchange student in America, using his personal shock with the
differences in memory-education as a backdrop to discuss the
possibilities for internationally sensitive nuclear thought. I then
presented my views on the limits of Hiroshima's "peace city" model as
a means for dealing with current nuclear issues and voiced my concern
for the problems left out of this narrative, including the widespread
use of depleted uranium weaponry. Finally, Mr. Ryosuke Ueno (JASC 59)
presented his realist approach to contemporary nuclear issues and
outlined a potential agenda for Japan's responsible nuclear security
in the future.

Our keynote lecture was delivered by Professor Mizumoto, an expert on
Hiroshima's history and nuclear issues, and we thank him deeply for
his participation. Special thanks to Ms. Kyoko Watanabe (JASC 59 & 60)
our moderator and Hiroshima JP event coordinator, Ms. Sayaka Shingu
(JASC 60) JASC Presents Organizer and Hiroshima team leader, our
translators Kayoko Hirata (JASC 60) and Ayumi Ohi (JASC 60) and all
the other JASCers involved in making this event a big success. Out of
the roughly 20 responses to our event questionnaire, everyone held
either a "favorable" or "very favorable" impression of the event!

I hope we can use this E-Forum as an avenue to continue our JP
Hiroshima discussion with all the recent JASC alumni out there in
cyberspace. To anyone who attended the event, please feel free to
share your impressions. If you couldn't make it, please post your own
opinions on the discussion topic so we can all respond. We also have
an internet-quality video of the entire event, which should be posted
in about a week so everyone can share the experience of the event
itself.

the borders of the conference and inspiring a new generation of future
