Hello everyone,
My name is Colin Moreshead, I am the chair of the American Executive Committee and I was a panelist for JASC Presents Boston on January 31st of this year. Reflecting upon the event, I would like to express my gratitude to the JASC Presents team for making it possible and congratulate them on a successful American debut.
The topics presented (for risk of sounding immodest) were engaging and insightful; I was particularly glad to hear critiques from our keynote speaker, Dr. Trent Maxey. Though our four speaking topics were not meant to be linked in any immediate way, he was able to draw connections between them and reveal an interdependence the likes of which is so often present in interdisciplinary area studies. My offering on the current economic crisis was tied to each of the other three topics; with more time available to us, I would enjoy further analysis of the relationship.
The audience's participation was befitting of the JASC spirit. Many excellent questions were posed, including several that were not answered simply. It was great to see a number of different attendees including alumni and many who were interested in applying. As was hoped, the discussions at JASC Presents Boston were not nearly finished by the end of the event; we instead invited those in attendance to continue to think about what was spoken about and to develop their own ideas on each topic.
I encourage everyone to continue this discussion in the future. It has been 150 years now since the US and Japan opened diplomatic relations, but the coming 150 years will be every bit as dynamic and crucial to our two nations. The past decade has seen a considerable loss of enthusiasm for the subject of US-Japanese relations, but it will doubtlessly be recognized as a key factor in the amelioration of the current worldwide economic recession. While it is unfortunate that it took such a catastrophic series of incidents to remind the US and Japan of the vital importance of our partnership and cooperation, I am confident that both governments will soon be compelled to re-evaluate their policies in the interest of facilitating a speedy recovery. I invite all of you to offer your comments, thoughts and opinions here on this forum.
I would like to thank everyone that attended and everyone who was involved for making this such a rewarding event. I look forward to participating in other JASC Presents events in both Japan and the US in years to come!
