The Journal of African American History - Katrina Rebuilding Project

Book Donations Needed for the African World Studies Special Collection
at Dillard University

Hurricane Katrina had particularly devastating effects on Dillard
University in New Orleans, causing over $450 million in damages.
Dillard University's Will Alexander Library suffered significant
damage to its book and periodical collections, and many institutions
and individuals have made donations to replace some of the materials
that were destroyed. However, there is no replacing the materials lost
or damaged in the library's "Special Collections."

Therefore, The Journal of African American History, the Association for
the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), and the African
World Studies Department at Dillard University have joined together in
a campaign to create a new "Special Collection" for Dillard's
Will Alexander Library containing autographed copies of books about
"the African World." We are asking published authors to send
autographed copies of their books to the "African World Studies
Special Collection" at Dillard University. Books donated to the
Special Collection will be acknowledged by Dillard University library
staff; and the author's name, the book's title, and date of
publication will be published in The Journal of African American
History. The books donated to the African World Studies Special
Collection will be made available to students and researchers who visit
and use the Dillard University library; however, as part of the
library's permanent collection, the books will not be placed in
circulation.

Many individuals have inquired about how they can assist Dillard
University in this massive rebuilding effort. Financial contributions
to the university's rebuilding program are truly welcome (see
website: www.dillard.edu). At the same time, if you are the author of a
book on the African experience anywhere in the world, and particularly
African-descended authors, we need your contributions.

Please send autographed copies of your books to:

Your participation in the Dillard University rebuilding campaign is
greatly appreciated.
