JA Honors 64 Organizations with the President's Volunteer Service Award
On March 7th, Junior Achievement USA honored 64 organizations with the 2015-2016 U.S. President's Volunteer Service Awards. The organizations receiving the awards provided Junior Achievement with significant volunteer resources during the 2015-2016 school year. The awards ceremony took place at the Paley Center for Media in New York.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award was established by President George W. Bush in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make in communities and to encourage more people to serve. Junior Achievement became an official certifying organization for the award in 2006.

Corporate Responsibility Proffessionals
How Corporate Responsibility Professionals View Employee Volunteer Programs
This spring, Junior Achievement partnered with the Corporate Responsibility Association (CRA) to gain a better understanding of how Corporate Responsibility (CR) professionals use Employee Volunteer Programs. The survey showed that 85 percent of respondents said employee volunteer programs are part of their company’s corporate responsibility efforts.
According to the research, CR professionals use these programs in a variety of ways. Most (59%) said these programs are aimed at boosting company morale, while nearly as many (55%) believe they are essential to employee satisfaction and retention. A significant portion also gives employees paid time off to volunteer (41%), highlight volunteering opportunities as part of their employee recruiting efforts (39%), and dedicate specific days of service to support nonprofit partners (32%).
Organizing employee volunteer programs does not come without its challenges. Because “return on investment” is often tied to these initiatives, the biggest challenge with these programs, according to one-third of respondents (34%), was measuring their impact. A summary of the survey’s results is available at Forbes.com.
JA Kid Professor
Shining a Light on Financial Literacy
April is Financial Literacy Month, and this year Junior Achievement was involved in several initiatives to help spread the word about this important topic. During the month, JA released survey results from Opinion Research Corp (ORC) that show 70 percent of teens don’t have a basic understanding of what a 401K is. Jackson Charitable Foundation also announced its support of the redevelopment of the JA Our City® program, to enhance financial literacy of elementary school students with the inclusion of content from Jackson’s successful Cha-Ching™ Money Smart Kids initiative. Finally, JA USA CEO Jack Kosakowski was a featured speaker at the Financial Services Roundtable’s “Financial Literacy, Why Media Matters” forum. During that session, Jack shared one of a series of “JA Kid Professor” videos, developed with the support of the Financial Services Roundtable.
