Dear friend-
Thank you for your interest in Amnesty International and in protecting the rights of refugees!
I’m thrilled to be able to share with you our recently launched campaign: I WELCOME. This 3-year campaign will focus on the rights of refugees and asylum seekers and what we (including you!) can do to make a difference. As you know, in the United States the rhetoric against refugees has been virulent, yet we also know that over 70% of Americans surveyed said the US should do more to welcome refugees.
Changing the narrative about refugees—particularly Muslim refugees—has to happen for us to make the changes we need to make in law and policy. That’s why we’re asking folks to visit our website at www.amnestyusa.org/refugee to download the Syrian Refugee Toolkitand take action on a very local level. We must have conversations in our local communities, with our local politicians, and with our local press to ensure that the message of welcome for refugees is made clear. We have city initiatives all over the United States—and we need you to be involved!
In addition, we’re asking President Obama to address to crisis at our own border, where tens of thousands of Central Americans—including over 68,00 children without a parent or adult—have been arriving annually at the US-Mexico border having fled unimaginable violence and who are now seeking protection. Our report on this crisis details out the violence and persecution that forces people to leave—and the danger that awaits them when they are deported back. Join our call to President Obama in his last 100 days to grant protective status to those who have fled this violence.
If you’re interested in getting involved with our work, including connecting with other local activists in your area already actively working on refugee rights, or if you just want to learn more, email DB...@aiusa.org.
Addressing the global crisis has never been more important. Global change starts with two words: I WELCOME, and it starts with you!
In Solidarity,
Tarah
