Hi David:
I use a very good, relatively inexpensive program called "Family Tree
Maker" which is produced by Ancestry.Com. The software is about $40.00,
and an annual subscription to Ancestry.Com is about $165.00. I did get a
30-day free trial of Ancestry with the software purchase. To me, it has
been worth the investment because it shortcuts hours of painfully
boring research. Of course, I still have to do some of the manual stuff
such as cemetery walk-throughs, library research, relative visits, etc. To
be successful at genealogy research, a person needs the patience of an
anthropologist, the resourcefulness of an inventor and the skill of a
detective. It's a lot of work, but the rewards are
unbelievably exhilarating: Like the day I opened a document and saw my
great-great grandmother's application for widow's pension after the Civil
War. The downside is that you may not find details on all of your
ancestors. I've been searching extensively for marriage and
death documentation on my paternal great grandfather without much
success. And he lived most of his last years within 25 miles of where I
now live. As you will soon learn, most of the 1890 U.S. Census
records were destroyed by fire; so a critical source of data is not available to
us. But we keep looking for alternative sources. I'm rambling; but
as you can see, I am keenly excited and motivated to keep on with my
research. Good luck to you, and happy hunting!
Regards,
Roger Davidson

I'm
sorry I don't have the time right now to help you look for your family
however, I'm very ill right now and getting ready to go to bed. However, here
are some links to searching in Hawaii. Hope they prove useful to you:
http://ulukau.org/gsdl2.7/cgi-bin/algene
http://hawaii.gov/dags/archives/about-us/genealogical-indexes-ulukau-website
http://ulukau.org/
http://www.islandroutes.com/
http://hawaii.uscity.net/Cemeteries/
http://www.daddezio.com/cemetery/junction/CJ-HI-NDX.html
http://viehweg.org/hhg/
The first
link takes you right into the on line Hawaii State website to an online
search area. You can look up everything except, as I recall, birth records, on
line The others are equally as good, including islandroutes it self, which is
excellent for those researching their relatives who moved to Hawaii from
the Açores.
Hope this helps you.
God Bless
