Hello everyone,

I need help with a small mystery. My great Grandfather, John Amaral,
lived in the Bay Area of California. He had many family and friends
in Hawaii. When he and his wife Rose passed away, I inherited their
large box of photos. I found a small card that I can’t identify.

On the front is a photo of a woman and on the back it says, “Thank You
for Helping to Celebrate the 75th Birthday of MABEL B. SILVA July 15,
1984".

I was next able to find her birth and death date on the Social
Security Death Index, 15 Jul 1909-01 Feb 1995. It says that the last
residence was Honolulu, HI 96804.

This led me to an obituary in the Honolulu Advertiser & Star-Bulletin,
“Mabel B. Silva, 85, of Kaneohe, passed away, Feb. 1, 1995 at Queen’s
Medical Cener. She was born July 15, 1909 in Honolulu. She was a
member of the Honolulu Institute #84 Y.L.I., Legion of Mary also
member of Koolau Senior Hui and St. Ann’s Parish. Survived by
daughter, Mrs. Frank (Carmen) Kiyabu; sons, Mr. Cyril H. (Diane )
Silva, Mr. Paul V. (Sharlene) Silva; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-
grandchildren. [Adv Feb. 9, 1995]

This led me to a ship manifest for the S.S Lubline, that sailed from
Honolulu, Hawaii on June 21, 1948 to San Pedro. The following family
was on board:
George Silva, Born Honolulu-8/3/1908
Mabel Silva, Born Honolulu-7/15/1909
Carmen Silva, Born Honolulu-5/25/1937
Cyril Silva, Born Honolulu-8/22/1940
Paul Silva, Born Honolulu-7/5/1943

The one thing I haven’t been able to figure out is what the connection
is to my family? Was she a cousin or just a family friend. Can
anyone figure out what her maiden name was? Surnames in Hawaii that
are related to my family are Amaral, Cabral, Borges, Roderick/
Rodriguez, Falcon, and Paschoal. Thanks for your help!!!

I bet the secret is in her maiden name or she was a good friend. Look up
her marriage certificate, it should tell you her maiden name.

Ronnie

PS: My great uncle, Jose (do Espirito) Santo's (married Palmeda Faria),
son, Lawrence (do Espirito) Santos, who was born in Honolulu, lived in
Oakland, with some Cabral's in the 1920's, he was listed on the Census as
their nephew.

Marcus,

Mabel's maiden name was Botelho.  her parents were Manuel Pacheco Botelho ( a barber in Honolulu) and Philmena Seabury.

Dan,

Thank you for the info!!!  At this time, I do not recognize either of the surnames for her parents.  That is not surprising.  It was a LARGE family and I have only found about half of them.  The search goes on....

Thanks!!!

Hi Ronnie,

The 3rd wife of my 2nd Great Grandfather, Manuel Amaral was Philamenia Cabral, DOB 12 Aug 1885 in Hawaii,  She died 13 Oct 1973 in Pleasanton, Alameda Co., California.  She was the Step Mother to my Great Grandfather, John Amaral.

I know very little of Manuel.  I have found him on several census records in Oakland, but on each one it has a different estimated birth date.  As best I can tell, he was from Sao Miquel.  I estimate Manuel and Philamenia were married in 1902, but I don't know if they married in Hawaii or Oakland.

Manuel had 5 siblings.  Mariano Frank, Mary, Joseph, Rose G. and John.  Manuel was the oldest.  See the attached picture taken in California, 1933.  Rose is listed in the Frietas book on page 180 with her husband Antonio Gomes Paschoal and daughter Adelaide.  I wish I could find Manuel and his siblings on a census record with their parents so I could get more info on their parents.  In the Freitas book, it says Rose's parent's names were John Amaral and wife, Anna.

I have good, detailed info on Mariano, Joseph and Rose.  I have limited info on Manuel, Mary and John.  It is my intention to put my info together and send it to the PGSH and see if they can fill in any of the blanks.  Life is hectic for me, hopefully I will get this done soon.

Thanks to you and everyone else's help!!!  Have a great day!

Robin & Marcus:

When I find the census, I'll send it to you. Maybe there will be a match
somewhere. I am thinking that the "Cabral" (in the census) is the brother
to one of my great uncles wife's. On the (do Espirito) Santo (s) side of
the family there were 2 sisters and 5 brothers. I can't account for 3 of
the brother's (Charles, Manuel, & August Santos) marriages, if any. I found
evidence that one may have married a Cabral but I can't find the certificate
to verify her age, parents, family, etc. So, will send what info I have
when I relocate it.

Looks like, if we are related it's by marriage somehow.

By the way, the 1930 PHM by J.F.Freitas, has, from my (da) Costa family
side: Jacintho Costa, Page 172 and Manuel Costa, Page 176. Manuel married
one of my Santo Aunts.

PS: I didn't get your picture, can you email it to me directly?
