I am stuck researching my father's family. I have the following
documentation proving my great grandparents existed

A copy of a Certificate of Live Birth for my grandfather, William
Mitchell Cruz, born 17 Jan 1908 in Honolulu,HI dated 10 Sep 1987
listing parents as John Cruz and Rebecca Perry,

A copy of a Certificate of Marriage for William Mitchell Cruz and
Mabel McComber, married 24 Dec 1937 in Honolulu, HI with William's
parents as John Mitchell Cruz and Rebecca Perry,

A copy of the 1930 Honolulu, HI census listing John M Cruz, born about
1882, head, born in Hawaii whose father was born in St Helena Island,
mother born in Hawaii, Rebecca, wife, born in Hawaii whose parents
were both born in Hawaii, son William, born about1908 in Hawaii,
daughters Pansy and Julia, both born in Hawaii.

A copy of a picture of the tombstone for John M.Cruz, Jan 4,1882-July
3,1968 and copy of the obit from the Honolulu Star Bulletin dated 18
Jul 1968.

A copy of the 1910 Honolulu, HI census listing John Cruze, head, age
29 Hawaii, race Chinese, Helen Cruze, wife , age 33, Mary age 14, John
Jr, age 10, Mc age7, Loui age 5, and William, age 2.

A marriage record from familysearch.org.listing a marriage for Max
Cruz,born 1901 married 31 Aug1921 to Grace Keauniui, born1902 with
Max's parents as John Cruz and Rebecca Perry.

A record found on Ulukau listing a marriage for John Napua Cruz and
Helen Perry 27 Jul 1908 in Honolulu, HI.

Ulukau's record and the 1910 census do not positively prove
genealogical connection, but definitely match closely.

This is where I am stuck. I can find no other existence of John or
Rebecca Perry outside these documents I cannot find anything any
where else. I have been told my father's family are Hawaiian/
Portuguese. So I'm guessing this may be where I need to look or
perhaps names were changed. Where else can I look for more
information? I would definitely appreciate any help from anyone.
Please and thank you.

Eric,

Thank you for the info. The draft registration card shows everything I already have for John except I have a different birth year. Social Security, a picture of John's tombstone, the 1930 and 1910 censuses show his birth year as 1882. Rebecca's birth year in the 1930 and 1910 censuses show her's as 1878.  John's occupation, I heard had something to do with ships or sailing. Maybe, if Justo de la Cruz was his father, this was a learned trade passed down the family. Very interesting.

Thanks,

Terri

FYI, I also found CH also stands for Caucasian Hawaiian. This makes more sence as I have never heard of my dad's family being part Chinese.

Terri,
I have never heard the term CH standing for Caucasian Hawaiian.  Though it should be noted that each census uses different abbreviations and those used in Hawaii as a territory differ from those used in the rest of the US.

I was wondering if you could tell us the line as you know it starting with the earliest ancestor?  I think that would help me process the info. better.

One thing to keep in mind is Cruz can be associated with Mexico and the Philippine Islands.  It can be used as a Portuguese woman's religious name, but I haven't seen it as man's surname.  There is a line that married into my own tree that was defined in census records as being from Spain, but we suspect that they may have been from the Philippines.  When they first arrived they used de la Cross and de la Cruz interchangably (later changing to Medeiros)

I wasn't familiar with St. Helen Island that John Cruz's father was supposed to be from.  I looked it up and it's in South Carolina.  Does that hold with what you know about the family.

I also second that you should be looking for Pereira for the first generation in Hawaii.  Perry is an anglicized version of Pereira.

Hope this helps,
Melody

Thank you, Melody, for your advice and suggestions.

The earliest records for my family are:

Monday (or Monte or John) Cruz born in Saint Helena 1837? died Nuuanu, Hawaii  26 Jun 1906, and Harriet Monday Cruz 1855-1918 (Connection and relation based only on similarities  with other supporting evidence.)

John M Cruz,  born in Hawaii 4 Jan 1882, died Honolulu, Hawaii 3 Jul 1968 , married Rebecca Helen Perry (aka Rebecca Perry Mitchell) born in Hawaii Aug 1878, died Honolulu 20 Sep 1936. (1907 marriage record shows parents are Monday Cruz (deceased) and Hattie (living),  and William Perry (living) and Mrs Perry (deceased).

John and Rebecca Cruz's children were Max (or Mac) born in Hawaii around 1903, died before 1937, Lui (or Loui) Cruz born in Hawaii around 1905 and William Mitchell Cruz (my grandfather) born in Honolulu 17 Jan 1908, died in Agana, Guam  27 April 1985.

I've looked up Saint Helena, South Carolina; Saint Helena Island; Saint Helena, Queensland, Australia; and any other Saint Helena or any other Saint with similar sounding name to see what I could find. Saint Helena is based on the 1930 census and newspaper articles about a Monday and Monte Cruz/ Crews and death certificate for John Cruz  all suggesting birth was in Saint Helena.

I have always been told my Cruz line is Portuguese Hawaiian. However, I have  found more Cruz's in Hawaii from the Philippines, and Puerto Rico, some from Mexico and Spain, and a few from Portuguese decent. I have also looked up various spelling of Cruz ie... Cruze, Crus, Crews, Crewes, Vera Cruz, dela Cruz, Dela Cruz, de la Cruz, Cross, etc... Perhaps the Cruz line is not where Portuguese connects. Perhaps it is the Perry side, which I found after research was a very common Anglicized Portuguese name in the 1800's. So I have been looking up  Perry, Perrierra, Perierra, Perriera, and any other variations I can think of plus Mitchell (and variations), my great grandmother's  married name before marriage to my great grandfather. I'll keep working on the other spelling variations you suggested, and other locations, too.

Terri
