I’m going to be visiting Oahu, the big island, and Kauai in October. I’d like to investigate the Portuguese cultural influences in Hawaii as my grandfather immigrated there (and subsequently to California)  from the Azores in the 1880s. I see that there is the Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society of Hawaii in Honolulu, which is open a few days a week. Is that worth a visit if I want to learn more about this history? Are there other places in any of the islands that have historical information about Portuguese immigrants?

Also, are the books you would recommend on this topic?

I am grateful for any help with this.

Hi Mary K,

I went to HI 10 or 12 years ago with a couple of friends. I didn't go to the Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society of Hawaii (my friends wouldn't have been interested and my ancestors did not migrate to HI), but my friends and I did go to a plantation. I just did a search and I'm pretty sure it's this one: http://hawaiiplantationvillage.org/  It has a little bit of Portuguese mentioned there. I remember walking around the Portuguese village there.

We also did the Dole Plantation tour (nothing about Portuguese there), the U.S.S. Arizona, the Polynesian Cultural Center, and a luau. None of those has anything to do with Portuguese though. My friends just wanted to see other tourist things.

Have fun,

Mary,

My paternal family is from the Big Island. Two places have a particularly high concentration of Portuguese. Honomu (by Hilo) and Honokaa (further west of Honomu on the main road (hwy 19 I think). Both places had large sugar cane plantations. There is a small drive-in in Honokaa called Tex's Drive-In. Great malasadas. Honomu is also near Akaka Falls. A great water fall. It is a small hike to get to the falls but well worth it.

Aloha Mary,

One great resource in Honolulu is the Central Library microfilm records located in their basement. There you can find birth/death/marriage records from the late 1800’s to 1949.

If you have the time and interest, with a little information you can find great records. Even “confidential” birth records where the child had no father or the father did not consent to his name being listed.

I’m not sure if the Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society has a physical presence anymore, but they were really helpful when I visited several years ago. I believe the founders have passed and not sure where all the records ended up.

Happy hunting!

Bruce,

Do you know the address for the "Central Library" . . . are they part of the Hawaii State Library system or the Hawaii State Archives?

The Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society of Hawaii seems to be keeping office hours. Their contact information is here:

You also need to go to Leonard's and get a malasada (Portuguese doughnut):

Thanks Bruce!  I know that at least one great aunt was born in Hawai’i maybe in 1885.   I haven’t been able to find any birth or baptism record. I have seen some vital records online but nothing matches. I assume records were sketchy in those years.

I’ll try the central library.

Thanks
Mary

Hi Bernice,
The Central library is located at 478 S. King St.
It is right next to the Archives bldg and near the Iolani Palace.
Happy hunting,
Bruce
