Note from a friend on the Irish Aires email list: You left out one important bit of trivia - 911 occurred on a Tuesday - the Irish government called for a day of national mourning on Friday and for the first time in the history of Ireland the pubs were closed!! (Of course hotels were exempted for everyone knows that a traveler (not a former tinker) needs a wee drop at the end of a journey. All businesses and all pubs were closed but by Jaysus you needed a shoehorn to get into the hotels doncha know. As a point of interest the Irish placed heaps of floral tributes at the entrance to the American Embassy (reminiscent of Princess Diana) and the line to sign the book of condolences stretched over two blocks.
