This question about levels of disability keeps come back...
During the Towards Inclusive Universities training (http://
www.tiu.org.tr/content/view/165/143/), the Dutch trainers said again
and again "levels of disabilitiy do not matter; removing the barriers,
by providing suitable alternatives is important".
However this message is not getting through clearly enough. Again
this week I have been asked about levels of disability: 'How disabled
are you?', by both disabled people and by authorities.
Several disabled people have said 'My situation is hard; don't compare
me with someone with a small problem'. The authorities seem worried
that if there is no 'minimum level', suddenly there will be hundreds
of students asking for alternative provision and support.
I understand the solution is 'Focus on the barrier, the hindrance;
when you solve the barrier, then everyone is equal'. This is a good
idea; now we have to do this in practice...
What happens in different places (countries/ universities)?
