Even at this early stage in this platform, the first 6 members
represent 5 countries: an good start as we already have members from
countries outside the original project.

This group aims to continue the work started during the EU project
'Towards Inclusive Universities, by Empowering Disabled Students'.
The project has partnership between 4 Turkish universities, the Dutch
Expert Centre for Studying with Disability in Higher Education
'Handicap Studie', the Netherlands Institute for Higher Education in
Ankara, and the European Association for International Education.

The project (July 2008- October 2009) aims at:
--Sustaining information exchange on disabled students between
universities;
--Improving management capacities of university disability
coordinators;
--Enhancing success of disabled university students.
--Raising disability disclosure rates;
--Linking generations of disabled students to improve university
entrance rates;
--Implementing and strengthening common standards for supporting
disabled students;

For information about what has been donein the project, please see the
website www.tiu.org.tr

I propose some points that might be discussed between disability
advisers in different countries.

*The needs of students with disabilities are universal.
* 'Increased choices for students with disabilities will benefit
others in education' (UK Disability Rights Commission, 2002)
*Many of the solutions are a matter of organisation and planning,
based on institutional awareness of the needs of all students.
*Some university administrators think disability is low priority.
*Students should be empowered to ask for their rights / solutions to
their problems.

We will think of many more subjects. Each can become a different
'post' on this GoogleGroup.
This is just a first message. I hope many more will follow.

Dear Mira,
The group members are given on http://groups.google.com/group/international-higher-education-disability-advisers/members

Google groups has the main menu on the right.  Home, discussion (this is for answering existing posts, or setting up new topics), members, pages and files (I'll discover how to use the last two soon, I think).

At the moment we have members in Turkey, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Britain and Bosnia.  Each member can add information to their profile.  You can add your information, then others can follow your example.

Best wishes,
Claire Ozel
