...Food Banks!

Breadline Britain: councils fund food banks to plug holes in welfare state

Local authorities asking 'big society' to deliver crisis aid to vulnerable people after social fund budget is cut next April

Local authorities are preparing to invest in charity-run food banks to cope with an expected deluge in demand for crisis help from low income families hit by welfare cuts, raising the spectre of depression-era US "breadlines".

Cuts next year to the social fund, which provides emergency aid to vulnerable people, mean that from April 2013 many councils will no longer be able to provide cash help to applicants. Instead they will offer "in kind" support such as referring clients to food banks and issuing electronic food vouchers.

Hi Grapplin

That creep David Cameron tried to grab the credit for the food banks the other day, claiming that they represent his "Big Society" in action.

Unfortunately for DC, this fairy-story was hardly out of his mouth before Boris Johnson gave him a mauling about a third runway at Heathrow.   Boris has charisma & charm.  Women, especially, love him because of that.   DC has no sex-appeal and comes across as a failed wannabe vicar.

I see that the Save The Children Fund has decided to take up the cudgels in the UK.  Princess Anne has been the President or the Patron of Save The Children for donkey's years now.   That charity has a much higher profile than DC and the Tories can ever hope to emulate.
