The City of Cape Town turns a blind eye to homelessness!
Tomorrow marks exactly a year since a group of about 210 people were evicted from the now-demolished Arcadia Building in Observatory, Cape Town. The evictees opted to move on the lawn in front of the building by putting up camp tents and named the new settlement, Singabalapha (We belong here).
In April this year, the City of Cape Town tried to relocate Singabalapha residents to the now-closed Strandfontein C19 Temporary Site for Homeless people. The residents refused to move and called out the City for pushing an agenda of overcrowded segregated settlements far away from the inner city and wealthy suburbs.
Tomorrow we will host a speak out to highlight our challenges, the constant harassment we have endured from the City officials, and the way forward to our plight.
We invite the media, civil society, and other progressive formations to join us in solidarity at 414 Main Road, Observatory from 2 PM.
