Cape Flats Women’s Alumni exhibition media invitation!
The Manenberg Safety Forum in partnership with the Cape Flats Women’s Movement invites members of the media to the official launch of the Cape Flats Women’s Alumni exhibition on Monday, 23 November 2020 at the Salt River Community House from 10 AM.
The event is named Cape Flats Women’s Alumni and originated from a space where women of colour were called incognito, something we know is not the truth. For years women have been playing a big role in shaping their communities, some with no academic qualifications just their knowledge of life and experiences on their journey.
With the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has become evident who the pillars and building blocks in our communities really are. Even with little to no resources they pulled together and started supporting each other in creating feeding kitchens as well as taking care of the people in their communities.
Some made time to support victims of crime and violence at court, checked in on those who tested positive for Covid-19 and in the absence of schooling they created safe space in their homes for children to keep on learning.
It was work 24/7 as domestic violence and substance abuse cases increased. Without shelters, it was these women that kept everything together in the absence of government intervention programmes for the most vulnerable. It is essential that we uplift these heroes and acknowledge their hard work, determination and commitment to humanity and their communities.
