Dear All,

Cricket is not all about power.

No Prologue/Epilogue or creative writing to keep the review's readable without dictionary assistance.

The Practice match with Aquilan’s on Saturday prior meridian passage proved to be too tiresome for some of the middle aged cricketers of team Aries, while the youngsters failed to utilize their bowling strengths to its fullest potential as Antilians clinically polished off the 167 runs scored by the Arian’s on a bright Sunday morning.

The Antilians were handicapped prior the start of their match with their captain and a senior player away on business trip outside Chennai while their magician spinner down with viral fever,However the stand in captain and the younger brigade rose up to the occasion and did everything else right for the team starting from the toss. Antilians officially played with 10 men for the record.

The match commenced with Team Antilian’s winning the toss and electing to bowl. The name twins (Hareesh & Harish) opened the bowling attack and were spot on with some accurate bowling. The muscular Arun nair and experienced VJ opened the innings for team Aries, very soon the mini procession commenced with Arun Nair and Praveen sagar back in the pavilion with 2 & 3 boundaries against their names on the score board.Sundar played elegantly but his back and across shot selection for a ball that did not have much bounce made the umpires job easy.

The excitement got the better of these budding young stars of Aries as wickets started falling at regular intervals more so due to poor shot selection than of good bowling. Even as VJ was trying to hold fort and avoid a bowl out with extended caution against some decent bowling, the young guns failed to capitalize on their starts to set a healthy target for their opponents. Lack of practice and waning stamina levels was for sure the cause for Sharif not wanting to stay at the wicket. A classic example of inexperience was on display as the youngsters failed to apply themselves due to their impatience. Team Aries ended up scoring 167 which seemed at least 30 short of what could have been a fighting total. Anand’s slog for the Arian’s at the end was the only highlight of the first innings apart from some neat cricketing shots from VJ’s blade earlier on.

As one of the stand in captain (Anand) was fighting a lone battle for the Arian’s the other (Virat) marshaled his resources well, brought in the required variation of gentle medium and slow bowlers to make things more difficult for the Arian’s. All the bowlers including newcomers Harish & Hareesh to Vijay and Poonacha to the senior most V’s Virat, Venkat and Vern gary came to the party, stuck to their plan and bowled with discipline.

The second innings started with Jayeesh and Muthuswamy opening the batting for the Antilian’s while Frinson & Anand the bowling for Arian’s. Short pitch bowling with any amount of pace is not effective was proved right once again as Frinson, Jawahar and Praveen sagar could not control their length.Anand meanwhile bowled with intelligence along with his trademark 2 wides down the leg side to bring some solace in an otherwise toothless bowling. After dropping a regulation caught and bowled chance Anand had both Muthuswamy and Jayeesh back in the pavilion, however with some pathetic fielding and mediocre bowling the name twins yet again built a match winning batting partnership. Had the runout chances taken the match could have gone either way but it was not to be. Wickets finally fell when the slow bowlers were given the chance to swing their arm. The target by that time was well within striking distance. The match was finally over in the 23rd over with 5 wickets in hand.Antilians scored 171/5 with a very healthy runrate.

Team Aries will now have to win their match against the Aurigan's by a very high margin to have any chance of playing in the finals.A good bowling side i hope will regroup soon and be more effective in the last match.

Excellent batting and bowling performances from Hareesh & Harish to get the team almost through to the finals.Keep it up guys. Arian's will have to now work it really hard for entering the finals.

All the best to both teams to do well in the last match. Anand,no need to thank us as we were busy reading the pace and bounce on the wicket while on the field.

Warm regards

Ganesh

Dear All,

A day to remember for the Aquilan's while a day to forget for the Aurigan's.

The 24th afternoon was not so different from the morning, pitch was with good bounce on one end and two paced on the other, slow and the ball was certainly not coming onto the bat.

Aquilan’s won the toss and elected to bowl against the strongest batting team and most obviously the tournament favorites. Ranjith opened the innings along with Nandakumar for Aquilan’s while Sudarshan and Arun opened the batting for Aurigan’s.The first 2 overs were quiet, the 3rd  delivery of the 3rd over went crashing into the cover fence like a tracer bullet, however Arun hoisted the very next ball into the sky which went in the extra cover region instead of the intended Mid wicket / Long on region , Ganesh took the skier covering a decent distance from Mid off on re-bounce, the crowd and the fielder were left stunned as a catch of such order was supposed to be a regulation 99 drop, out of 100.The Aquilan’s went twice lucky as Nishanth pulled a stunner at midwicket to send the dangerous Ramesh back to the pavilion. The team was disappointed and to add more salt to the injury, Madhan ran himself out pushing the ball straight to the fielder at covers. Nandakumars pick and throw reminded Azharuddin in his hey days. The 3 wickets which fell under 8 overs put some sort of pressure though the run rate was pretty healthy and the score for the Aurigan’s read 52/3 after 8 overs.

Sudarshan was taking the attack back to the opposition with his copybook drives, cuts and pulls leaving the bowlers unhappy and clueless before getting deceived by a straighter one from desikamani that skidded through and hit him plumb right below the knee roll to be adjudged LBW.

The match was evenly poised during the drinks break with Aurigan’s at 79/4 in 15 overs with Chandramouli and Umesh at the Grease and whole lot of talent players in the dug out.The 17th over was the most productive and also the turning point of the match, though 9 runs were taken of Ganesh’s bowling Umesh kept running not wanting to listen to his partner and ran himself out trying to steal the extra run of a misfield from Senthil at the sweeper cover position. This opened the flood gates as the rest of the batsmen barring chandramouli in the team committed Harakiri and were back in the pavilion without putting up any sort of fight. The Aquilan’s were all over Aurigans in quick time, the spin work by Desi and Ganesh was too hot to handle by the Aurigan’s as wickets fell like nine pins. Chandra, Anand, Viswanath, Satheesh & Shivram all of whom have their natural talent could not retrieve any of those from their archive to bring about some change to the outcome of the match. The Aurigans from a comfortable 91/4 after 17 overs got bowled out for 101 in 22 overs.

Desi was the pick of the bowlers scalping 4/9 in 5 overs, while Ganesh picked up 2/12 in 3 overs.Ranjith and Nandakumar picked 1 wicket each and two excellent runouts completed the batting scorecard. When during Mid innings break the strategy by the Aquilan’s was to play sensibly and to win the match with a decent runrate but what transpired into Desi’s mind when he was at the 22 yards was entirely different.

The Aurigan’s opened with Aravind and Anand duo while the Aquilan’s opened with Desi & Viswanath,Some good calling, excellent running and the customary extras that were given by the Aurigan’s hurt the team badly and by the end of the 4th over when Viswanath got runout in a rare mixup, Desikamani went on a rampage and made mince meat out of the Aurigan’s bowling. The match ended inside 10 overs which as per MOSC statistics an all time recor. Desi scored 59* of 28 balls, the complete dominance has put Aquilan’s at the top of the table with an unmatchable runrate while Aurigan’s are languishing at the bottom with 2 points and a very unhealthy runrate. Viswanath vaidyanathan was the only bowler who got the lone wicket of Shanmugam for 32 in 3 overs.

The Aurigans’ are now aware that they will have to beat the Arian’s by a very high margin to have any chance of entering into the finals with the 1st match being abandoned due to rain and the points shared.

Lessons learned

The slam bang T20 cricket and 30 over match are totally different. Talent alone cannot bring about the required results; the ability to adapt to changing circumstances as the game progresses is the key to winning. Clear doubts crept if any real analysis was made of the game or had any plan was ever formulated of which bowler to target and when.Since the ground being reasonably big and with the relatively slow nature of the outfield, singles and two’s were the only way to build a par score. None of the Aurigan’s barring Sudarshan and Chandramouli understood the game in its true nature.

Aurigan’s must wake up from their dormancy, lift their game up and play positively to ensure they now put up a strong fight with the other teams to enter the finals. Aquilan’s must not get carried away and play well against Antilia which again has a bunch of youngsters who could play the waiting game and a lot of talented seniors whose absence was compensated by the young rising stars. Let us hope the next week brings the teams closer in the points table and the net run rate comes into play.

Warm regards

Ganesh

Dear all,

The 1st paragraph read "while the youngsters failed to utilize their bowling strengths to its fullest potential as Antilian's clinically polished off the 167 runs scored by the Arian’s on a bright Sunday morning.

The "as" prior Antilian's on the above sentence should have been "the."
Regret error and oversight.

warm regards
Ganesh
