I got a voice mail from the "IRS" today telling me that it was my final notice that the IRS was going to file a law suite against me, which prompted me to look on the web to see if the IRS actually leaves voice messages.

Here's some information that I found.

I called the IRS number 800.366.4484 and soon realized that I was going to be on hold for a long time.  Then I went to their web site http://www.tigta.gov. and filed a complaint there.

These methods are effective because they weed out people who know the scam is not real. Those people who return a voicemail or robocall have self-selected as particularly vulnerable to the scam. Fraudsters then do not have to waste time on the phone, trying to convince a target that they are real. They can get straight to the extortion.

The IRS will never make initial contact with you over the phone – only through certified mail. If you do receive one of these voicemails, there are two steps you can take to report the fraud:

  • Report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at http://www.tigta.gov.
  • File a complaint using the FTC Complaint Assistant; choose “Other” and then “Imposter Scams.” If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.

I could've told you that! :)
The IRS will NEVER call you or show up at your door. You'll receive mail if they need to get in touch with you.

Legit IRS number and IRS website -
IRS 1800 829 1040 (like the tax form, pretty clever, huh)

I'm glad you called the TIGTA number and website. These scams are happening more frequently.

Well, this may not have been informative for you but I wanted to share what I've found to make sure everyone knows.

Well, it's not quite correct information that the IRS will contact you by certified mail. It's not certified mail usually. Usually it's just plain old first-class snail mail. They won't contact you via email either. I'm just adding onto your information :-)

A word of caution. The best place to get information regarding the IRS is on the IRS website. Tax theory, laws etc. There's a lot of misinformation out there on other websites.
