The latest is that Microsoft is now offering this for free until October 13, 2026.

My summary would be this:

In order to enroll

-- You need to log into your Microsoft Account

-- You need to sync your settings a preferences with Microsoft Onedrive

Once you've enrolled you can turn both of those off.

If you don't see the option to enroll you might have to update Windows 10 first to the latest version.
