Job Overview:
A key activity of the Network Engineer is to complete an bandwidth assessment to ensure sizing of Talen Energy's circuits will support the anticipated network traffic during the network and application migration period, and in the end-state after all migrations are complete. Additionally, the Network Engineer will also assist in integrating other sites that have been acquired by Talen Energy into the company's network. Within the scope of each site cutover is ensuring that all network gear is identified, configured per Talen Energy's practices, and incorporated into standard monitoring and alerting tools, including those leveraged by third-party service providers. The Network Engineer will be part of a team that provides Level 2 and Level 3 operational support on a 24x7 basis during the stabilization period following site cutover to Talen Energy's network. Level 1 operational support is provided by a Third Party service provider. Under general direction from Talen Energy staff, the Network Engineer will need to understand the following technologies in support of the site cutovers: IP networking, WAN/LAN, Cisco routers and switches, firewalls, internet, WiFi, MPLS, DHCP, VPN and VoIP.
Specific duties include:
• Complete a bandwidth assessment to ensure sizing of MPLS and point-to-point circuits will support the anticipated network traffic
• Assess, plan and implement network changes in support of site cutovers
• Assist is building site cutover scripts that detail every change needed to cut a site over from PPL's network to Talen Energy's network
• Perform specific tasks as part of a team executing pre-scripted site cutovers, including potential night-time and weekend cutover activities
• Utilize SolarWinds to monitor and evaluate network stability, utilization, throughput and latency
• Troubleshoot network issues and determine associated remediation plans
• May be required to take periodic day trips to Talen Energy sites in PA, MD, NY and NJ to complete a portion this work
