After a long ride down, Six Flags is moving back up
Six Flags Entertainment Corp. ended its long ride through the fright house Tuesday, when the Grand Prairie-based operator of theme parks reported its first annual profit since 1998. While earnings got a huge boost by one-time gains related to its Chapter 11 bankruptcy, from which it emerged April 30, Six Flags' attendance and revenue also grew from the year before. For all of 2010, the company reported a net profit of $598.9 million on $976 million in revenue as 24.3 million guests visited its 19 parks in North America.

FastPass coming to Mickey Mouse's new home at Magic Kingdom
FL - Disney World is introducing Mickey Mouse to FastPass. Magic Kingdom guests soon will be able to reserve a one-hour window to meet the icon at his new digs just like they can do to avoid lines for major attractions such as Space Mountain, the Disney Parks Blog announced today.

Object used in GPS treasure hunt closes Downtown Disney
ANAHEIM – Downtown Disney was reopened after about 90 minutes Tuesday following a report of a suspicious object that turned out to be part of a high-tech treasure-hunt. Anaheim Police Sgt. Bob Dunn said police received a call of a suspicious object in Downtown Disney at 11:07 a.m.

Disney workers sue over identity-theft risk
Disney employees filed a class-action lawsuit against the company claiming that employee identification cards expose them to identity-theft risk. (Story updated at 2:20 p.m.) The suit was filed Tuesday morning in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

Regional Theme Park Extends Environmental Efforts Energy Plan to Reduce Park Consumption by 6 Million Kilowatts
Valdosta, GA - Wild Adventures Theme Park (WA) turns its focus to the environment with the announcement of two new conservation projects. The park continues efforts to conserve energy and resources by changing to energy efficient lighting and adding a park wide recycling program, all before the season begins March 12. WA began environmental efforts in 2010 with the planning of more than 500 trees and looks for future projects that will continue to decrease its carbon footprint.

Great Wolf Resorts Reports 2010 Fourth Quarter Results
For the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2010, the Company reported a net loss of $(29.2) million, or $(0.94) per diluted share, compared to a net loss $(10.2) million, or $(0.33) per diluted share for the same period a year earlier. The 2010 fourth quarter results include year over year growth in revenues and improvements in operating margins, offset by a non-cash $18.7 million impairment charge related to the carrying values of the Company’s Traverse City and Kansas City properties.

Animal encounters in the green glades of Happy Hollow Park and Zoo in San Jose
CA - reporting from San Jose — Since the Happy Hollow Park and Zoo in San Jose completed a $72-million renovation in March, it's attracted a new set of visitors besides all those tykes and toddlers in high-tops and jeans. Because of the renovation, the zoo was awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certificate — the first in the nation for a zoo or amusement park — by the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council.

Council approves projects for zoo
Topeka, KS - The Topeka City Council unanimously approved two capital improvement projects Tuesday evening for the Topeka Zoo. Zoo director Brendan Wiley said the moves would help the zoo's credibility with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which is expected next month to consider revoking its accreditation.

Haley assails Myrtle Beach's penny tax for tourism
SC - Gov. Nikki Haley opposes local option sales taxes, such as the one adopted in Myrtle Beach to pay for tourism advertising, she said Tuesday in a speech to tourism leaders, drawing criticism from Grand Strand elected officials. Myrtle Beach City Council passed the tax, with proceeds going to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
